Have you ever wished there was a reliable way to confirm you were in a healthy weight range, without stepping on the dreaded scales?
Well, according to scientists at City University London, you may now be able to avoid considering the kilos altogether – simply by measuring the circumference of your waistline.
According to the study, the key to keeping healthy (and living longer) is – cue drum roll – maintaining a waist measurement no bigger than half your height.
After looking at records of more than 300,000 adults spanning 20 years, the researchers determined that those who’s waist measures half their height or less should live to the average life expectancy (currently around 81 in the UK).
For an accurate assessment, they advise measuring between your lowest rib and hip bone – and no breathing in ladies!
With the more traditional body mass index (or BMI) measurement now considered unreliable, we’re interested to see whether there will be a shift towards an emphasis on proportions rather than just kilos for healthy weight management.
