It’s the age old question: why do you always break out right before a big event? While we may never know for sure (although we think it might be stress), we can break down the potential reasons why you’re experiencing consistent (and totally frustrating acne).
Acne is the most common of skin diseases, affecting 85 per cent of Australians aged 15 to 24 years old (source: The Australian College of Dermatologists). And while the percentage drops significantly over 24, it’s not uncommon to experience adult acne. So, you’ll want to make sure you’ve got your skin care routine in order (top notch cleanser and a list of actives), and you could also consider incorporating a skin-supporting supplement into your routine.
When it comes to taking supplements, doctors know best. And while we might be able to point you in the direction of the market’s most popular options, we want to make sure that you speak to your doctor before starting any new supplements. So check out our skin-supporting suggestions and then check in to a doctor’s appointment to find out exactly what’s best for you…

What causes blemishes?
Look we get it, having a blemish can feel like the end of the world (especially as an adult). While you may want to blame yourself, sometimes it just comes down to genetics. So what’s the cause of ‘em? Now if we could diagnose every single bump on everybody’s faces we’d have truly cracked the code. The main causes of blemishes are hormones (ever noticed a breakout the week before your period?), clogged pores and poor diets thankfully most of those we can work on.
How do you treat blemishes?
Well, first off you’ll have to assess (and accept) the problem. No, you don’t need to be shunned for a few blemishes across your face, but you do need to speak up about them. So, if your skin errs on the side of hormonal, we’ll be needing you to speak to your doctor to get help. But for the sake of clogged pores, a simple addition of an exfoliant can help to open them up and work away the built up sebaceous oils. Of course, adding in a skin-saving serum here, and working with a deep-reaching device there will definitely help cleanse out your skin. But it’s also important to focus on your diet (and especially your water intake – we’re talking 2L a day). Make sure you’re getting enough fruits and vegetables and enjoy excessively oil foods in moderation.

Do you deal with blemishes? What’s your blemish-treating routine?
I try to eat healthy rather than take supplements
I wish I’d taken better care of my skin when I was younger.
Hindsite is always so frustrating XX
Agree, when one is young one thinks the skin will never change.
I wish we were more aware of the skin barrier when I was younger, instead of using overly harsh cleansers!
I still get some mild acne in my 50s (perimenopause) but possibly also stress related at the moment
(as I’m sure many of us dealing with atm, regardless of age!)
Normally, I find gentle cleansing and regular moisturising along with serums tailored for my skin, good sleep hygiene, drinking enough water and a healthy diet makes a significant difference.
If I had acne I would try these.
Yes with acne ones tend to try anything and hope it will work.
“…the percentage drops significantly over 24”? I’m probably in the minority on that one.
Zinc is great if you have acne
yes zinc is a very handy product
They seem like a good idea, never tried those.
Luckily I don’t get too many blemishes, and definitely not acne. But I feel for those who do and understand why you’d be willing to try anything.
I dont either thank goodness.
The SkinB5 were great for my daughter when she was in her teens and I also used them when I was an adult with such oily skin!
