We’re all familiar with the morning rush. Between finding an outfit, doing your hair and getting out the door to catch the bus on time, breakfast often gets shoved to the bottom of the to-do list. So on those busy mornings, what’s healthier: grabbing something – anything – on the way to work, or skipping brekkie altogether?
Well, great news. Research has revealed that skipping your morning ‘break of the fast’ is far worse than fuelling up on a sugar-filled doughnut, because by eating something, you’re giving your metabolism the boost it needs as you start the day.
“When we skip breakfast, we are actually doing a major disservice to our bodies,” says Maya Bach, LDN, owner of River North Nutrition in Chicago, USA. “Your body is ‘fasting’ all night, so in the morning, it needs fuel to start revving up our metabolism. And without food as fuel, our bodies aren’t able to function at peak performance.”
Here comes the good bit…
“While a doughnut isn’t the ideal fuel for your body, it will at least jump-start your metabolism, helping your body and brain to get moving,” she says. “If you eat nothing, chances are you will feel tired, sluggish, and have low energy throughout your morning.”
God bless you, Maya!
But don’t go gobbling all of the croissants every morning – the point here is that it’s only considered healthy if you have no other more nutritious options for brekkie, so those oats or eggs are still the better option. Sorry!
