This Is Why You Should Be Wearing Socks To Bed, According To A Doctor

Much like the divide keeping tomato sauce in the fridge creates, there are few fence-sitters when it comes to the topic of wearing socks to bed.

So as proud socks-to-bed-wearers ourselves, Dr Jess Andrade’s latest TikTok revelation has delivered us the news we’ve been crying out for; a scientific reason as to why popping on a pair of cosy socks truly is the greatest pre-bedtime ritual you will ever engage in.

Comfort, cosiness and absolute bliss aside, Dr Andrade explained that by reducing the risk of cold feet during the night you will increase the circulation of blood, avoid constriction of blood vessels and in turn avoid a restless night’s sleep.

“Wearing socks makes your feet warm and this opens up blood vessels that cool the body down,” she said. “The body being cool tells the brain that it’s time for bed. So people who wear socks to bed tend to fall asleep faster”.

In fact, according to the National Sleep Foundation, warming your feet (in any capacity) before bedtime will send a signal to your brain that it is time to sleep.

So if wearing socks all night long is a sacrifice you just aren’t willing to make, soaking your feet in warm water before you hit the pillow will have a similar effect on opening blood vessels (but hopefully not your bladder) while you snooze.

  1. Wow didn’t know that I wear Socks to bed in Winter Time because they do warm me up and makes me feel cosy . Don’t wear Socks in the Summer Time because I always feel too Hot.

  2. I always wear two pairs of socks to bed in winter, and during summer I’ll have a shower and go to bed without socks but often I’ll get up in the middle of the night or early morning hours to put a pair of socks on and then I can fall right back to sleep. If my feet are just the slightest bit cold I just can’t sleep. My husband, on the other hand, doesn’t wear socks any time of the year and sleeps just fine.

  3. No thank you. My feet are always warm and wearing socks makes me over heat. Im someone that always hangs my feet out of the covers during Winter as they get too hot. My Dad was the same.

  4. I’ve been thinking about wearing socks to bed as I have very dry skin and am thinking of slathering some deep moisturising creams in my feet and popping on socks so I don’t mess up the bed sheets with too much grease.

  5. I only wear socks to bed when it’s really cold. No need to overthink it – if your feet are cold, put socks on. If not, don’t put socks on. I think this is less about socks and more about your pre-bedtime routine. If the point is to increase warmth to your feet to signal to your body it’s time to wind down, a bath or shower will accomplish the same goal.

  6. I nearly always wear socks to bed, unless it’s a really hot night. The problem we have in our house…..hubby feels the heat, and I don’t. So he wants/needs to leave air con going overnight, and I freeze!

  7. I don’t tend to wear socks to bed unless we’re away. I think my feet (especially my feet) need to breathe. I do struggle to fall asleep when my feet are cold but thats when my trusty electric blanket comes in handy or roll up to my own personal human sized water bottle. The heat coming off my husband is soo nice when I’m cold.
