Louise and Monica had been hoarding ancient eyeliners like family heirlooms. See how Bh updated their make-up bags with fresh colours for the new season…
Like mother, like daughter
When beautyheaven sent a shout out to members for make-up kits to makeover, we were flooded with tales of outdated eyeshadow and long-past-their-best lippies. But this distress call from Monica, a digital producer from NSW, really got our attention: “My mum and I need a make-up bag makeover! I have almost-empty foundations from years ago, mascara that is old and manky and lipsticks from when I was a teenager. And we share make-up.”
Not sure it sounds like a major emergency? Here’s the clincher: Monica and her mum, Louise, had “second- and third-hand eyeliners” in their communal kits. Obviously, we had to take immediate makeover measures…

“Mum used to work in beauty and be a model,” explained Monica. “She says she doesn’t even recognise herself anymore. She just needs some help selecting the right colours for her.” Top of Louise’s wish list was a fresh foundation that would look natural and feel amazing on her mature skin.

“It’s fantastic – I got exactly what I wanted,” says Louise. “It’s glamorous without being overpowering.” Her favourite new products? “The Mary Kay mineral foundation and the lipstick.”
We chose mineral foundation for Louise because it provides care as well as coverage and won’t ‘puddle’ in lines or pores. The tinted moisturiser is perfect for the hydration she needs and the natural look she wants. To turn up Louise’s glam factor while keeping it simple, we included a shiny pout plumper and a pink gloss that she can either lacquer over lipstick or wear alone for everyday sophistication. The wine-inspired palette of easy-to-wear and co-ordinated eye colours also takes her look from day to night really easily.

Skin: Combination with warm, yellow undertones Eyes: Hazel Beauty style: Natural
“Being a mother of two and working full time, I very rarely get to spend time on myself,” said Monica. “I still get pimples and have open pores around my nose, so foundation is my favourite product – it hides all the imperfections. I’d like to try a mineral foundation as I’ve heard it’s better for your skin and pores.”

“When I opened my new kit I was, well, the only way to describe it is gobsmacked and very, very happy,” says Monica. “My favourites have to be the foundation, tinted moisturiser and mineral blush.”
For Monica we picked products built for speed and simplicity. We gave her two types of non-comedogenic mineral foundation to try – the long-last powder for durable coverage and the liquid because it’s an antioxidant treatment and light foundation in one. Both have SPF, which will help protect collagen and prevent pores sagging. The mineral blush is undetectably natural yet pigment-rich, so it won’t require touch ups during the day. We gave Monica some understated eyeshadow, but the on-trend-for-winter eye quad will look really beautiful with her hazel colouring too. This Maybelline palette is also perfect because it comes with step-by-step application instructions.
