Kate Middleton Is On Royal Duty Hiatus After Abdominal Surgery

Are the royals just deciding to get all their yearly doctor’s appointments done and dusted in January? Kate Middleton and King Charles have both been admitted to hospital for separate health issues this week.

The Prince and Princess of Wales released a joint statement via Instagram yesterday that revealed Catherine was admitted for an abdominal surgery:

“Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales was admitted to The London Clinic yesterday for planned abdominal surgery. The surgery was successful and it is expected that she will remain in hospital for ten to fourteen days, before returning home to continue her recovery. Based on the current medical advice, she is unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter.”

“The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this statement will generate. She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible; and her wish that her personal medical information remains private.”

“Kensington Palace will, therefore, only provide updates on Her Royal Highness’ progress when there is significant new information to share.”

“The Princess of Wales wishes to apologise to all those concerned for the fact that she has to postpone her upcoming engagements. She looks forward to reinstating as many as possible, as soon as possible.”

Comments on the Instagram post queried that perhaps she’d suffered a burst appendix, while others with experience in the healthcare system said her condition must be serious for her to need two weeks to recover in hospital.

Prince William will also be relieved of his royal duties during Kate’s recovery period, which is also highly unusual.

But it gets even weirder, because the palace has also released a statement that King Charles has been diagnosed with an enlarged prostate that he will also be receiving surgery for a benign tumour in a week’s time.

The double medical bulletin is said to be a first for the Royal family and understandably has people concerned.

What do you think about the Royal family sharing intimate details about their health with the public?

  1. It’s none of our business but a lot of people are interested. I guess they are trying to find the balance between keeping the public informed but not giving out too much personal info.
