Well, according to Julia Roberts, that is. And I tend to agree. (But don’t get mad at me just yet – you’ll see why I feel this way in a second.)
The title American Sweetheart is given to USA darlings of the big screen. They’re seen as kind, friendly and sweet – both on and off screen – and their kind-hearted nature leaves you wanting to be their bestie. Or their sister. Or their daughter. They also tend to star in romantic comedies, rarely taking on serious, strong or dark roles.
That said, I have to agree with Julia Roberts – who clearly is an America Sweetheart – when she indicated in a recent interview with MTV’s Josh Horowitz that Jennifer Lawrence is “too cool” for the American Sweetheart title.
Why? Jennifer Lawrence is a legend. She is funny, she is talented, and she’s the hilarious best friend you’ve always wanted. She’s more than sweet – she’s got balls. And attitude. And flair. A wallflower she is not. Her ability to rise to worldwide fame through the role of Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games proves that. And frankly, if she stopped opting for meatier roles in favour of playing weaker, not so independent characters I’d be outrageously disappointed.
