You care about the condition of your hair. You care about the state of your skin. But I’m guessing the health of your liver is probably not at the top of your list of concerns, huh? Well, that needs to change and it needs to change now.
“The liver is the largest organ in the body and the centre for detoxification,” says Judy Davie, founder of The Food Coach. “It plays a massive role in the body, including processing food nutrients.”
Because of its importance in a healthy functioning body, it is vital that we don’t place excessive burden on our liver or lead a lifestyle that can lead to liver disease. “The good news is this: over time most people can reverse liver damage by making healthy lifestyle changes,” reveals Judy. Phew.
10 WAYS TO ENSURE YOUR LIVER STAYS HEALTHY
1. Start the day right.
And by right, Judy means drinking a glass of hot filtered water that contains a squeeze or two of fresh lemon juice each and every morning as soon as you rise.
2. Up your water intake.
Drinking at least two litres of filtered water each day will help flush out both your kidneys and your digestive tract.
3. Limit artificial stimulants.
This means cutting out – or drastically reducing – the amount of alcohol and caffeinated beverages you consume. Judy also suggests cutting out all pharmaceutical drugs, unless specifically prescribed by your doctor.
4. Take herbal supplements.
Take a clinically-proven natural herbal medicine to aid the renewal of healthy liver cells. (Judy suggests taking Legalon by Flordis three times a day for optimal results.)
5. Reduce your saturated fat intake.
This means limiting dairy and red meat in your diet where possible.
6. Consume a green smoothie or juice each day.
This will give your body much-needed nutrients and fibre in an easily digestible form. Why not try this juice recipe? It’ll give you glowing skin, too.
7. Cut out wheat products.
However, to ensure you still get your carbohydrates fix, Judy suggests eating small amounts of rye, oats, quinoa, buckwheat, millet, barley and brown or black rice.
8. Increase your fibre consumption.
You can do this naturally by making sure you consume seasonal fresh fruit or vegetables at every meal.
9. Make eating protein a priority.
Judy’s favourite protein sources are white fish, organic chicken with its skin removed, tempeh and raw nuts.
10. Stop eating so much food.
We all tend to eat more food than our bodies actually need, which puts pressure on our liver. By reducing your overall intake of food, your liver will have less work to do, allowing it to work more effectively and efficiently.
