How to deal with PMS

When it comes to our menstrual cycles, every woman is different. But no matter if you’re usually curled over with cramps or eating everything in sight, there are a few pieces of advice that are universal. Below, Ms Colette Heimowitz, M.Sc. Nutritionist and Vice President of Nutrition and Education at Atkins Nutritionals Inc, offers her top health tips for that time of the month, and the beautyheaven team share how they deal with period pain.

#1 Don’t weigh yourself

If you’re on a weight loss mission or just like to jump on the scales regularly, avoid doing so during your period. “Many women may hold water and experience weight gain in the lead up to and during their menstrual cycle. Normal weight fluctuation is 2.5 kilograms, so just stick to healthy eating and exercise and wait to weigh yourself until after your cycle,” explains Collete.

#2 Don’t stop exercising

“Even light exercise, such as walking or jogging, will encourage your body to produce endorphins – a naturally occurring chemical in your body that boosts mood, and is often considered an elixir of happiness,” says Colette. So if you tend to feel a little sad and weepy, don’t stay at home watching Titanic –  get up and move! You’ll feel better for it, promise.

#3 Do keep healthy snacks on hand

Some women crave chocolate and sugar when they’re on their period, so to lower the risk of buying that Mars Bar, stash healthy snacks in your desk drawer or handbag. You’re less likely to cave if you have an easy, ready-to-go option in front of you.

#4 Do find a pain relief method

Period pain isn’t fun, so figuring out what helps to ease your menstrual cramps, headaches or any other symptoms will make that time of the month much more bearable. Not sure how to deal with period pain? Here’s how the bh team does it…

“When I have my period, I tend to get mild cramps if I’ve been sitting at my desk all day. I like to stretch it out by reaching my arms above my head and arching back while taking deep breaths.” – bh’s Rosie

“I drink A LOT of peppermint tea. I find it comforting, and it’s really good for cramps. I also like going for a light walk as I’m not as conscious of the pain when I’m moving, plus it wears me out a bit so I can sleep later on!” – bh’s Beth

“I get the WORST period pain. I went on the pill in high school to combat it, but unfortunately it seems I’m stuck with it. I try to take a painkiller as soon as I start to feel the pain coming on, because otherwise it doesn’t work as well. I also avoid eating carb-rich foods or anything bloating, because that just makes me feel worse.” – bh’s Anna

“I don’t suffer from period pain often or horribly, but when it hits, I keep a heat pack around. I basically spend my day making regular trips to the microwave to make sure my tender womb is being looked after.” – bh’s Carli
