We recently filled you in on the foods that burn calories, but if you’re not one for diets, you may be interested to hear a new fat-melting cream is in the works.
Skeptical? So were we. But if the fat fighter – called XAF5 – lives up to its promises, it may just turn out to be bigger than Botox.
Still in the trial stage in the US, it’s the first non-surgical treatment that claims to diminish excess fat without injections – and it’s already been used to target under-eye bags with pretty impressive results.
Speaking to allure.com, professors involved in the study say it works by “reducing fat in the area where it’s applied without using any heat or cold, radio frequency or sound waves”.
Just like Botox, it was discovered by chance, when glaucoma patients trialling drops formulated to reduce eye pressure noticed a pleasing side effect: less puffiness under their eyes.
The ophthalmologists leading that study wondered if there was something in the formulation giving chemical instructions to the fat in the eye area, causing it to shrink. To test the theory, they then turned their attention to developing a non-irritating ointment using the same molecule in the eye drops.
According to the results of the subsequent trial (which will soon be presented to the American Academy of Dermatology in San Francisco), many of the participants who used the ointment nightly saw less fat in five weeks. After ten weeks, they felt they “looked more rested and youthful”. Interestingly, examiners in the double-blind studies also saw the same improvement.
Unfortunately, our American counterparts may have to wait until 2018 for the product to get FDA approval. If it makes it to the market, it’ll also require a prescription – and that’s before it even reaches Australia. In the meantime, studies are already underway to test XAF5’s ability to reduce under-chin fat.
