After discovering holistic health while battling with eczema, Carla Oates founded the now cult beauty elixir brand The Beauty Chef. In a piece written directly to her website, the 46-year-old credits nourishing meals and her probiotic powders amongst the few wellness rituals that are keeping her ‘gut happy, immunity strong and skin glowing’.

When it comes to adopting wellness habits, Carla shared some universal advice: “Be realistic about what you can achieve; rather than trying to cram in five new rituals before 9am, pick one and commit to it for a week”.
She also urges people to keep things in perspective: “Be gracious with yourself and remember that life is never as neat as it may appear on someone’s social media feed”.
Here are some of the wellness tips and practices Carla uses to keep her mind and body in check:
Keep a journal
A de-stress trick that is ingrained in Carla from her days as a beauty writer, she looks to journaling as a way to “explore solutions, pursue ideas and evaluate things from a healthy distance”. She describes it as the “perfect pre-work ritual”, saying that jotting down her thoughts before starting the day allows her to be “calmer, clearer and more present” before tackling the chaos and business that lays ahead.
A quality sleep
In what Carla refers to as “the one wellness ritual we should all take a little more seriously”, a quality night’s sleep is a key player when it comes to stress management, building a strong immune system and building a strong gut microbiome.
Try to move every morning
It’s taken a world pandemic and being forced into lockdown to truly appreciate something as simple as a morning walk around your local area. For Carla, a sunrise walk around her local park is a moving meditation which she describes as a “natural filing system for my brain”, that provides mental clarity and helps to set her up for the day.
Nourish from the inside out
All year round Carla takes a combination of her Glow ($65, available at thebeautychef.com) and Collagen ($45, available at thebeautychef.com) for gut and skin nourishment. According to Carla “the health of our gut microbiome can have a major impact on how we react to environmental allergens and food intolerances”.

What are your go-to tips for starting your day off right and keeping a clear mind?
My best tip is not to read or listen to the news. its all doom and gloom and no one needs to start their day that way.
Carla Oates has some very inspiring advice concerning looking after the inside and the outside of our bodies. Making some changes to your lifestyle might just help you have a better day and week.
I love this sort of simple wholesome advice. Changing a few small habits can make a huge difference.
I agree – I stopped watching the news and reading news articles because of the constant negativity. I couldn’t handle it
I like to exercise in the morning as well because it lifts my mood and is a positive start to my day
I tend to do the most movement (aka housework ¯_(ツ)_/¯ ) in the mornings when I’m most motivated.
I’ve created a playlist on spotify with all my fav upbeat songs, keeps me dancing and gets me in a great mood to start the day
I take a shower with a loud music on. And dance at the same time. Then yoga. Then beverage.
Its a very negative and depressing way to start the day. Someone should have got smart and printed a ‘Happy News’ Newspaper…..im sure it would have sold well.
Drink plenty of warm water, add a splash of lemon juice, eat a good breakfast, limit the news and do some stretches
I’m not a morning person – which is a symptom of thyroid disease. I can’t spring straight out of bed when I wake up: I have to lie there & get my senses for a few minutes, first. I need a shower to wake me up. I always have Metamucil with wheatgrass & inulin powder & a cuppa – or three!
Some good tips there.
Keeping a journal is good
I’m not a morning person. It takes me ages to get going. I get up, take my medications, have breakfast while I check emails and Facebook etc, wash my face and then by then hopefully I’m more with it.
Absolutely agree!
I’m far from being a morning person but when I wake up I get up. Coffee is first on the list while I check emails, FB and IG. I used to read a lot of news but I’ve cut right back and only read the positive news items. I then shower and spring to life.
I stretch a lot in the morning, I like to get my blood flowing. I try and eat healthy but it doesn’t always happen.
Mornings for me .. coffee shower get ready for wrk haha ! On weekends I love to have more coffees and relax ! Make a nice breakky. I am more of an arvie workout person. But would love to do some stretching or some sort of mini workout in the house on work days
That would be a good idea! Only positive and uplifting news
I’m a morning person and like to go for a walk early in the morning.
Since working from home I have been getting up at the same time as usual and going for a 1 hour walk instead of my 1 hour commute into work. I am not sure what I am going to do when we need to start coming into the office again.
I try and exercise when I get up, makes me feel more awake
I have Carla’s Glow every morning around morning tea time along with my morning tea and it does make me feel great every day.
I have my daily rituals and its important as a person who suffers from depression and anxiety to keep it simple and healthy.
I’ll have to check out the Glow product
I love to go for a walk read a book take a relaxing bath or play solitaire with cards.
It’s obvious some patients with herpes are being enslaved to the antiviral and other supplementary Orthodox medicine just to help suppress the virus and not a cure. She is a smart lady – I saw her once in person doing a talk at one of those health expos in Sydney. (Gone are the days atm!!) She was very inspiring to listen too. I’ve been into her products ever since and now also use her Body products.
I go through spurts of this and often stop because life is much better usually without it. Occasionally there is some good news.
I tend to have most of my energy in the morningss too SP
I love stretching but don’t do it enough. I find I get encouraged and want to join in when one of my daughters starts doing some in the common area upstairs. Occasionally there is a few of us all doing a few stretches together! I’d love to do it regularly though.
I thoroughly enjoy a good walk too lgauci! : )
I love her gentle approach to things.
Yeah especially in the light breeze in springtime clearcrystalwater.
