Those who watched this year’s series of The Block would be fondly familiar with the fan (and judge) favourites, Sarah-Jane and Tom. Though the season recently wrapped up, the power couple are back in the headlines. However, this time it’s for something far more important than a disappointing day at auction: Sarah-Jane’s health. Sharing some news to the couple’s Instagram, Sarah-Jane opened up about her recent procedure where she underwent an elective double mastectomy.
“It’s been a long time in the making. I’ve been on this list for [over] five years,” Sarah-Jane shared, after revealing she was a carrier of the BRCA1 gene which puts her at an increased risk of developing breast cancer. The same disease which her mother was diagnosed with at 36. “Then, the day before The Block auction, they called me [and said] ‘we’ve got a spot for you,'” she said.
Five days on since undergoing the preventive procedure, Sarah-Jane seemed in good spirits as she updated her Instagram followers dressed in her hospital gown and “ALDI shopping bags” — the nickname Tom had given to the fluid-draining bags she’s had to wear post-procedure.
How is Sarah-Jane’s recovery going?
“I’ve got my compression bra on, which they ask you to wear afterwards. I’ve had all my breast tissue removed, then I had implants put in straight away,” she said. And in her classic glass half-full attitude, she assured followers, “I’ve got some bruising but all is going pretty well to be honest.” We’re happy to hear it.
“I do have my nipples, for people asking. They were able to save my nipples, not everybody’s nipples are salvageable.” And right she is. In fact, leading areola prosthetic specialist, Niki Cirillo recently called on nipple mould donations for breast cancer survivors.
We’re sending Sarah-Jane and Tom all our love and support.

I haven’t watched the show, but I wish her all the best in the future.
Wow, that would be quite traumatic for her! All the best for her recovery!
Good on her!
I’ve never watched the show, so I don’t know who she is. It’s lucky she had the preventive procedure before she could develop cancer. Hopefully, it’ll work.
Fingers crossed, in theory, it should right?
It’s a big decision to make, hope she recovers well.
I don’t know who she is but all the best to her! I can’t imagine how difficult and stressful that must be.
I wish her all the best. She’s so funny.
I didn’t watch the show but I do wish her all the very best. My niece has recently gone through this and still has another surgery to go. 🙏
Don’t they do it at the same time?
WOW, She’s a real little pocket rocket and I am saddened by this new but I am glad she prevented getting breast cancer.
I don’t know her but sorry to hear and hopefully it works out for her.
Wow. Never seen people do this when healthy.
Neither, is it common? I have no idea.
definitely not common. I do not think healthy women would do anything like this!
This is such a big decision. Hope all goes well.
So it is preventive from her getting the cancer, is that right?
Yes this is to take the risk of breast cancer as she was extremely high risk prior to the operation
No guarantees. Best way to prevent it is by being healthy, lots of raw fresh greens and unprocessed foods. Give up eggs they feed the cells that duplicate to cause cancer. Look up the medical medium info.
Good on you -What a lovely happy family and a very lovely partner too.
I don’t watch the show, but I hope she is doing well. She seems like a upbeat kind of person.
I must be the only person in Australia who doesn’t watch The Block!
I don’t either lol
Best of luck to her and her family
Sending good thoughts to her for recovery <3
She has an amazing aptitude to life and I hope all goes well for this lovely family.
Sad, especially when there is no guarantee you will get or prevent it by doing this.
Brave girl
Wow, what a hard decision it would have been to make. Wishing Sarah-Jane all the best.
She is very courageous.
