With all the factors determined to rob our hair, skin and nails of their general glossiness and joie de vivre, you may be finding that your regular beauty and health routine just isn’t cutting it.
But before you go running out to buy all new products, try thinking about small changes you can make to your current beauty routine.
If you’re not currently taking any supplements, perhaps speak to your GP about adding some to your daily regimen. We know supplements may sound scary for some, but rest assured there are plenty of choices out there that are rich in natural, ethically-sourced, good-for-you ingredients and can help boost your health both inside and out.
Here are 15 vitamin, protein and mineral-boosting supplements you may want to try…
Best supplements for Skin, Hair AND Nails
If you need help in a little extra help across the board, there are supplements available that contain ingredients to target the hair, skin and nails all at once. Yep, it’s an option to simply prioritise one tablet/sachet a day to enjoy the benefits of glowing skin, healthy hair and strong, shiny nails. It’s all about selecting an ingestible product that heroes the right ingredient: collagen, for example, is an all-star all three areas.
FYI, an easy way to remember to take them is to keep them next to your toothbrush in the bathroom. And just in case you’re worried about the sensory struggle you’ve found with supplements in the past, we’re just putting it out there that these Vida Glow Natural Marine Collagen Sachets Pineapple ($70 at Vida Glow) do happen to be pineapple-flavoured…
Try: Vida Glow Natural Marine Collagen Sachets Pineapple ($70 at Vida Glow), Blackmores Nails Hair and Skin ($17.99 at Chemist Warehouse) and Swisse Ultiboost Hair Skin Nails+ ($14.83 at Chemist Warehouse)
Best supplements for your Nails
When searching for a vitamin or supplement for stronger nails, biotin is the ingredient to look for on the label. This vitamin helps produce amino acids, which in turn create protein, and protein is essential for the growth of strong nails and will help reduce breakage and increase shine.
Try: Nature’s Way Beauty Collagen Shot ($22.99 at Chemist Warehouse), The Collagen Co Strawberry Watermelon Collagen Powder ($79 at The Collagen.co), Now Foods Biotin ($25.82 at iherb.com)
Best supplements for your Skin
Taking supplements for the skin can help to promote a clear and glowing complexion. Look for ingredients such as vitamin E, which helps to strengthen the capillary walls and promote healing and collagen to reduce wrinkles and improve skin texture and firmness.
Try: Vida Glow Radiance Capsules ($90 at Vida Glow), Nature’s Way Beauty Collagen + Hyaluronic Acid Tablets ($24.99 at Chemist Warehouse), Swisse Collagen Renew Skin + Stress ($24.99 at Chemist Warehouse)
Best supplements for your Hair
As well as biotin (which has similar strengthening effects on hair as well as the nails), other ingredients to keep in mind for stronger, longer, shinier hair are zinc, vitamin B-12 and iron. These ingredients help to strengthen the hair fibre and help repair damage from heat styling and colouring. Taking a supplement for your hair can make it grow faster and thicker, while reducing hair loss.
Try: Viviscal Maximum Hair Growth Supplements for Women ($64 at Chemist Warehouse)
Best beauty supplements for Sleep
Many of us don’t realise how much the weather and a change of season can impact our sleep. If you’re struggling to doze off, try taking a natural sleep powder or supplement one hour before bed. Look for ingredients like melatonin, magnesium, lavender and valerian root when shopping for a natural sleep aid. And unlike medical or chemically-based sleeping aids, a natural one won’t leave you feeling groggy the next morning.
Try: Swisse Ultiboost Sleep ($21.99 at Chemist Warehouse), Nature’s Way Magnesium Sleep Well ($22.99 at Chemist Warehouse) and JS Health PM+ Sleep And Calm Mind ($39.99 at JS Health)
Do you have any go-to supplements?

I am not a great one for supplements but do take Vitamin D. Maybe I should consider others?
I can’t be bothered checking if I have said this before on this article but I take four organic supplements – and really there is nothing in there but 100% the ingredient – hemp seed oil, apple cider vinegar, coconut oil, and tumeric. I am less irritable (lol), my periods a lot less painful, and I like to think some of it keeps my heart and gut in check. I also fall asleep much more easily. Nails grow back faster. Hair thinning has not really improved though – not sure these even help with that actually.
Ethelinde have you tried a good collagen powder for your hair loss? Mines growing back after a good scalp care routine, and Nutra Organics collagen. Plus I take a few other supplements my naturopath recommended, and have regular blood tests ❤
I take echinacea for immunity
I too hate it when products are only available through a website and postage is added. Maybe you’ll have to switch brands – such as Dr LeWinns or Skin Physics – because at least Priceline often have them at 40% off.
I will have to check out Priceline 😀
I’m not currently taking any supplements, but I have brittle nails that break easily, so maybe I should consider taking something for them.
Some great ones there…
I’ve used the Swisse Sleep it didn’t work for me but straight Valerian does, also I take magnesium not sure if it’s necessary as well. I’ve also used Cordyceps.
Would love to try
why wouldnt a standard multi vitamin work. most of these just have everything you need … when you sart messing multiple its not good
Ray_jay most multivitamins are rubbish! Talk to a naturopath or Nutritionist. They contain very small amounts of each vitamin/mineral, and a lot of the cheap brands, our body doesn’t even absorb. I always take everything separately noe, and have a regular blood test to make sure I’m not deficient in anything.
I have just bought Green Tea x50 fresh tea burst for skin hair and nails
I really want to try the x50 green tea too! I love their mushroom, broccoli and cauliflower “chips”! So much better than snacking on the usual junk lol

I am not taking any supplement currently. But tried some of them in the past and had good experience with them.
Some of those sound interesting, but I’d want to check that they didn’t interact wiht any of my prescriptions before I took them.
I take vitamin c tablets in winter.
I have started taking collagen
I always wished the BH team would consider me for an appliance trial! Long ago I had electrolysis which reduced it all much but not 100%. It was very expensive at the time, and time consuming. And sometimes the operator wasnt good and caused big bruises! Nowadays I have an epilator. They differ in quality and efficacy too. Im curious about the IPL devices. Have seen cases of burns from salons getting laser removal wrong, scary, but havent heard of problems with the hand held home use devices.
The Nature’s Way Collagen Beauty Dust is delicious.
Not for me.
I’m sure you will get a turn of trialling something one day AS : )
The 3 supplements I swear by for winter are Vitamin C, Zinc and Olive Leaf. Vitamin C is excellent for collagen formation as well as reducing the severity of colds and flu. Zinc is amazing for your immunity and Olive Leaf assists with upper respiratory problems. As soon as I feel as though I have a cold coming on, I pop a few capsules and they keep it at bay.
Powdered collagen in my coffee every morning!
Nutra Organics Beauty collagen powder is my favourite powder to add to everything! It’s completely tasteless and can be added to soups, sauces, desserts, anything! Their bone broths are fantastic and delicious too, and since using it, my hair, nails, and skin has improved so much! Can’t recall highly enough!!! I don’t believe a lot of the collagen tablets and fancy looking powders get absorbed as well. You need the right collagen I believe… they also improve gut health so much!
“Hydrolysed Collagen Peptides, VERISOL® Bioactive Collagen Peptides, Camu Camu*, Orgen-Zn® Guava*, Horsetail Herb*. *Certified Organic Ingredients”
I tend to just take what I’m deficient in, then my hair, nails and skin seem to take care of themselves.
