Anne Hathaway has never shied away from opening up about her fertility struggles or complicated pregnancy journey. In 2019, in an Instagram post announcing the birth of her second son, Jack, the caption read: “all kidding aside, for everyone going through infertility and conception hell, please know it was not a straight line to either of my pregnancies. Sending you extra love.”
And now, as both her boys are five and two, and the prospect of having a third is potentially on the horizon, Anne is reflecting on the journeys both behind and ahead of her. “I could see us going for another one,” the Devil Wears Prada actor told The Wall Street Journal, opening up about how motherhood has changed her life for the better, though it hasn’t always been easy.
“There’s this tendency to portray getting pregnant, having kids in one light. As if it’s all positive,” she said. “But I know from my own experience, it’s so much more complicated than that.”
So what was the revelation that inspired Anne to step away from her notoriously private life and get real about her struggles with getting pregnant? “When you find out that your pain is shared by others, I just feel that’s helpful information to have, so I’m not isolated in my pain,” she shared.“I mean, what is there to be ashamed of? This is grief, and that’s a part of life.”
And with those harder times came purpose and a fresh perspective: “I didn’t feel fully landed and fully here until I was a mum.” Further reflecting on this thought, she went on “It’s not like I was lacking integrity, but it made me want to be completely, on every level, true to my word. And that meant stopping any nonsense that I had going on inside myself.”
So, how exactly is she implementing this change in mindset? “[Through the] little breaks that you give yourself sometimes when you know that you’re not being your best self,” she explained.
Sounds like sage advice to us; we love you Anne!
What do you think about Anne’s interview?
I’m glad Anne is sharing her struggles as well as her successes and I hope it helps others who are going through similar situations.
Agreed, it’s so brave of her.
Great honest interview, capturing the realities of being pregnant and parenthood.
Yes pregnantcy is never easy for anyone. Some love being pregnant and other not so much. I remember, while in labour with our first, saying never doing this again. But 18 months later there I was in the very same position. Would never change my two girls, they are the love of my life and I am glad I had them
I agree. I hate reading articles like “pregnancy was a breeze” or “I didn’t feel any pain when giving birth”.
I agree with sharing struggles. My kids think I overshare. I try not to share about their struggles, as it’s their business.
I didn’t even know she had a child but happy for her
Loved Anne’s interview! She’s absolutely right that there’s nothing to be ashamed of – I never had issues having my three but my sister certainly had her issues and ended up having one which was quite a miracle after she found out what was causing her issues.
I think it’s great Anne opened up about her struggles
Loved devil wears prada! That is the only movie I saw her in.
Everything she went through in the end is so worth it, two great kids!
But so easy to assume the wealthy don’t have the same problems as us lesser stars. I so wish her well.
I’m a fan of Anne Hathaway, she has such a great expressive face
She is wholesome.
Anne is amazing and so generous to share as she is a private person-Bless her
This is a great article. It gives reassurance to those in the same situation as she was in.
I’m so very happy that Anne Hathaway is so down to earth regarding going, through Pregnancy and Birth and loosing the birth weight nothing is easy.
I love seeing celebrities being honest and open about their life.
Great story. Happy for her.
Anne is really lovely
I think social media makes it even harder for anyone struggling with any part of life, not just fertility and motherhood, as people only share the highlights so there’s this distorted view of both the world and yourself.
Yep. Even when a pregnancy is much wanted, it can be complicated and even hard.
Totally agree- same goes with breastfeeding!
Good on her letting others know this
She sounds surprisingly down to earth!
She prefers going by Annie which I find makes her even more relatable in a funny way…
It isn’t easy for many and it is really annoying when people ask.
Yes, it’s no one else’s business!
I always like when celebs speak up on struggles you feel like you can relate
She is very relatable.
Very much so!
So good for privileged stars to share their struggles and not pretend they lead a perfect existence.
Good for celebrities to share real experiences. Anne is a lovely actress.
I really like Anne. I find her to be a real/normal person compared to most other snobby celebs.
Love Anne!
Annie Hathaway is a warrior- like most women!
So brave of her. Glad that it’s normalising this conversation and taking away the taboo of this topic
I love that she shared her story, it is a hard journey for some.
Love hearing about celebs and their journeys
I enjoyed reading this article and all the best for Anne to be so honest
Such a good actress 🙂
More brutally honest discussions from women are required about infertility & struggles with it.
