Just when you thought you’d seen every kind of unnatural hair hue, a new trend is taking rainbow manes to the next level. First, it was pixelated hair, then the Cruella craze known as split hair, and now we’re seeing locks that are reminiscent of the sand art you made at the local fair growing up. Or a rainbow paddlepop. Either way, we’re diggin’ it.
Yes, it seems that My Little Pony hair can finally be yours with big thanks to the hair care line, Pravana, who’ve obviously been listening to our mermaid prayers. They’ve created an in-salon dye product called Vivid Locked-In, which gives colours hair in long-lasting, intensely saturated hues that won’t stain other strands, run or transfer. We’re mesmerised… Are you?
As for the colouring technique, it’s a little complicated and definitely one for the pros. To get the intricate, multicoloured, multidimensional result, dye is applied to layers of hair in a flow of rainbow colours. Colourists start at the top, painting the roots a solid shade, and work their way down the hair shaft to end with another, completely different hue. By dividing hair into three sections, experts can create a rainbow effect that locks in colours without mixing them together.
And if the rainbow-haired pics are blowing your mind right now, wait til you see the process in action. Watch clever colourist Rebecca Taylor using Pravana hair dye to demo the kaleidoscopic sand art hair look. But be warned: It’s hypnotic, so don’t be surprised if you suddenly feel the desperate need for rainbow locks!
