Expert Says We Won’t Be Getting Our Hair Done In Salon Until At Least Christmas

If you’re currently in lockdown in Sydney and NSW, a finance expert has made the grim prediction that it’s unlikely we’ll be getting our hair done until Christmas. Ain’t that a kick in the guts?

Wondering what a finance expert would know about such things? Well, Latitude CEO Ahmed Fahour has said that after Victoria’s lengthy lockdown in 2020, the personal lender’s loan volumes increased by 43 per cent.

He’s predicting a repeat occurrence once the current lockdown eases, saying that those living in Sydney will be keen to get out and enjoy life without thinking too much about their wallets. And this, of course, includes beauty treatments.

‘Hairdressers, beauty salons, all these things – you will not be able to get an appointment in NSW. It will be booked out,’ Mr Fahour told The Australian Financial Review.

“Once we get out of this environment, you will see a huge explosion in growth because people want to enjoy life, they want to enjoy Christmas.”

Damn straight we want to enjoy Christmas – but we want good hair while we’re at it!

The theory of this cash splashing spike has been dubbed ‘revenge spending’, and stems from the idea that we’ll all want to make up for the lost time spent in lockdown.

So if you were putting off a DIY hair colour in the hopes you’ll slide right into your hairdresser’s seat come restrictions lifting, you may want to rethink your strategy (or book that appointment in advance now).

Need an at-home hair dye?

If you’re looking to touch up your roots only, we highly recommend Clairol Root Touch-Up Permanent ($9.49 at Chemist Warehouse)  – the applicator brush it comes with makes targeting the section a breeze.

For an all-over colour, nothing beats Napro Palette ($5.99 at Chemist Warehouse) and Schwarzkopf Brilliance ($14.99 at Chemist Warehouse) for a shiny finish – and don’t forget to cater for the men at home too with Schwarzkopf Men Perfect ($10.49 at Chemist Warehouse).

But if you’d rather wait it out than mess with your professional colour, sit tight and perhaps add a colour-protect shampoo and conditioner to your shower lineup. Sebastian Professional Color Ignite Mono Shampoo for Coloured Hair ($36.95 at hairhouse.com.au) and the matching conditioner both will do the job nicely.

And if it really is going to be that long before we get to sit in a salon chair again, consider using the time at hand to work on some other hair goals.

Perhaps you’ve always wanted to grow it long? Or see what it looks like when you leave your greys to flourish? Or, if you’ve been experiencing hair loss or thinning, it could also be a good opportunity to commit to a thickening system like the Nioxin System 3 Trial Kit for Coloured Hair with Light Thinning.

Whatever you decide to do, we’re making the pact now that we will not judge each other’s hair when this is all over.

  1. My hair is definitely getting longer! Thankfully it is in good conditione due to the quality cut I got before lockdown, the Aveda products I bought from the Rewards Room last time and also the Grow product from the Natural Beauty Month box. All these good things add up and I feel like my hair is quite ok.

  2. Not currently in lockdown, really feeling for those who are. Imagine how amazing it’s going to feel when they get that first cut, colour and blowdry, wax or mani/pedi.

  3. I’m also not in lock down at the moment but hated it when I was for 1 week. It drove me up the wall so I can only imagine how those in NSW and Victoria feel not being able to have things done for months. I guess you can always shave instead of waxing, colour your own hair if possible but it’s the hair cutting that just can’t be done at home. Stay safe ladies.

  4. I always wear my hair back so getting it cut isn’t a problem. Actually I am thinking about cutting about 10cm off it this week with the help of hubby. Then I am going to use Colourless to remove my current brunette & red colours and go Ash Blonde or Strawberry Blonde. I love dyeing my own hair.

  5. I needs foils ASAP!!! I’ll have to get creative with my regrowth in the interim. I usually colour every 2 months. Last year I didn’t get a colour for 4 months. I’m just over the 2 month mark now so there’s hope lol. I’m growing my hair so I don’t trust myself with DIY as tempting as they sound 🙂

  6. Don’t go to the hairdressers, hubby helps me trim it and I always coloured it myself. Investing in a good pair of scissors is all thats needed. I feel sorry for hairdressers who have lost income due to all the lockdowns though.

  7. I’ve been desperate for a haircut for ages. I just tie it up. As for colour, well I’ve only ever done it myself anyway. But like everyone, I’m so fed up with this bloody lockdown and can’t wait for it to be over!

  8. Currently in lockdown here in Sydney, but unwilling to dye my own hair. The greys & regrowth are bad atm , but I’d rather wait to get into my own hairdresser & I know my mum feels the same way (she hasn’t had a colour since late May & I keep threatening to dye her hair as the grey regrowth is baaaaaaaaaad). Both of us need a cut too, but I know what I’m like with scissors & I’m not about to risk it!

  9. Very happy with my decision last year to grow out my natural hair colour last year. Saving so much on dye appointments and no regrowth during this time.

Luckily I got a haircut not too long before lockdown so I should be set for a while. Feel sorry for all the hairdressers who will be doing it tough to not be working in Sydney for so long.

  10. Not in lockdown but I’ve been home colouring for, I dunno, 5 years now? I don’t tend to do it that often. Time to myself is the problem. My latest favourite is Garnier Olia. I’ve also used Solfine but that is a bit fiddly.

  11. Sorry Sydney and Melbourne members. I’m in Brisbane so no lockdown here at the moment, but you never know when the next one will be, so I definitely have to book in for a hair cut soon… after half my hair shed, and my blonde ends are just straw now

  12. I have my hair cut and coloured every six weeks and it’s now been 12 weeks since my last salon visit. I’m getting desperate.

My hairdresser has me down for an appointment as soon as she opens.
