What’s the most irritating thing about your hair?

While some of us are plagued with frizz, unconventional kinks, and supremely dry and brittle strands, there can be far worse cases of irritating hair.

Like being stuck with a sensitive scalp that peels at the first sign of irritation, for example. Or having an itch that, when scratched, leaves telltale signs throughout your hair as well as on your clothes. I’m talking about itchy, irritated scalps and dandruff – and those who suffer from it know that not only is it kind of embarrassing, but it can also ruin a perfectly good hairstyle, and your confidence to boot. And we can’t have that, now can we beauties? So it’s time to take action! But before you try and treat the problem, it’s important to have an understanding of what causes it – and then you’ll know how best to treat it…

What causes itchy scalp / dandruff?

An itchy scalp can be caused by many things, the most common being an allergy or sensitivity to hair products, stress, dermatitis, or a flaking of the scalp.

Flaking of the scalp – also known as dandruff – is often caused by an onset of psoriasis, or if the scalp is frequently exposed to extreme temperatures. As our skin cells are forever renewing themselves, it’s natural that when the skin cells on our scalp are renewed the old ones are pushed to the surface. However, for a person with dandruff the renewal is faster, meaning more dead skin cells are shed, making the dandruff more noticeable. Irritation and itching often come hand in hand with that.

What’s the solution?

There are a number of solutions for an irritated scalp and/or dandruff, ranging from the homeopathic to the medicinal, with one of the most effective being the use of coal tar (as strange as it may sound!). Now beauties, before you get your hard hats on, we’re not telling you to run off to a builder’s site to find this scalp-soothing ingredient – simply head to your local supermarket instead. Why? Because the scientists behind NEUTROGENA® T/Gel® Therapeutic Shampoo have found a way to reformulate coal tar into an active ingredient called NEUTAR®, which is equivalent to coal tar 0.5% w/v – making it a safe and effective ingredient for controlling the itching and flaking associated with the dandruff.

Why is it effective for my hair?

NEUTAR® is clinically proven to fight itchy, flaking scalp conditions by slowing down cell proliferation and reducing scaling of the scalp. Due to the strong smell of coal tar, many products don’t contain it – yet luckily, NEUTROGENA® have patented a way to refine the coal tar and remove the impurities that give it its strong scent and dense colour.

NEUTROGENA® T/Gel® Therapeutic Shampoo also contains no oils or wax, which means hair has body and shine and is never left limp from heavy wax build-up. So you’ll be saying bye-bye to an irritated, flaky scalp, and hello to healthy, shiny hair!

Always read the label. Use only as directed. If symptoms persist see your doctor/healthcare professional.
