While the make-up and styling showcased during the episode was probably a little too OTT to be sported on the streets of Oz (somehow I don’t think giant bows and conical up-dos are conducive to a day at the beach), toned down a bit, there are definitely some elements that could be incorporated into a spring/summer look.
So say sayonara to your same-old style, and konnichiwa (that’s ‘hello’ in Japanese!) to a cool new Harajuku-inspired look. Here’s how to do it:
1.) Add a bold splash of colour to your face with a statement eye shadow. It doesn’t have to be as extreme as the girls’ red shadow, but you can create a funky eye look by blending a bright hue around the outer corner of each eye – kind of like a smoky eye, but with colours that pop.
2.) Get creative with your hair accessories. Forget sparkly bobby pins and Alice-bands (snore!); instead, opt for vibrant flowers, printed headbands or interesting antique adornments. Again, less is more so don’t try to recreate Sophie’s full-blown bouquet!
3.) Go long and luscious with your lashes. As Amanda and her Japanese mentor prove, all it takes is some standout lashes to create a funky, yet feminine look. Simply slather on a few coats of your favourite lengthening mascara, or go all out with some strategically placed falsies.
4.) Don’t be afraid of adding a little va-va-volume. Big hair is back in a…erm…big way this season, so start experimenting with some volumising mousse and a bit of gentle backcombing and see what new styles you can create. Try: TRESemme 24 Hour Body Amplifying Mousse.
