Goodness, I love a good top knot. Or a good twist. There’s just something magical about them – they conceal frizz, flyaways and dirty hair, and they also give your mug a mighty fresh facelift without opting for painful measures. Yep, they are full-fledged geniuses.

TERRIFIC TOP KNOT #1: Julianne Hough
Wow. Just wow. It’s hard to draw your eyes away from Jules’ crystal blue peepers and phenomenal tomato red lip, but if you do, you’ll notice her stunning top knot. What makes this so top spot-worthy is the messy texture in the knot, the slightly off-side positioning, and naturally wispy bits. It’s exceptionally imperfect.
TERRIFIC TOP KNOT #2: Diane Kruger
In a complete flip, here we have a sleek and very sophisticated top knot. It’s tight, it’s slick and it’s ravishing. To keep the bun smooth, Di would’ve applied a smooth serum to her ponytail before twisting and pinning in place. My only gripe with the ‘do is the ‘bits’ by her ears. Wispy bits are grand, but these are edging on the 90s. In a bad way. Props for the glowy skin, brilliant brows and fluttery lashes, though, Di.
TERRIFIC TOP KNOT #3: Nicole Richie
Nic is never one to stick to the straight and narrow when it comes to fashion and beauty, and this braided top knot proves her leadership in the field. Although quite sleek and prim and proper, the addition of the braid creates a dinner texture, a different finish, and a different edge. It’s quirky and feminine at the same time. Love the softness the sweeping fringe creates, too.
TERRIFIC TOP KNOT #4: Cara Delevingne
She’s got the best brows in the biz, but Cara proves she’s not just a one-trick beach babe wonder with this sleek twisted knot. It’s flat yet textured, and grungy yet ladylike. The deep bronze smoky eye adds a fierce touch, while the wispy bits keep it a little ballerina-esque. And although I am still opposed to these ‘bits’ they do make her less look less ‘harsh’.
TERRIFIC TOP KNOT #5: Kristen Stewart
K-Stew claimed a spot in the top eyeliner looks of 2012, and her textured top knot is one of the best too. Wonderfully wispy and utterly feminine, this ‘do actually incorporates a braid up from the nape of the neck and up to the crown. Genius, huh?
