The bridal hairstyle bible

The bridal hairstyle bible

Until I began helping a friend organise her wedding, I can safely say I never really understood quite how much was involved. There are the big things to consider –  like the venue, the theme and the guest list; and then there are the smaller, yet just as important decisions to mull over – like which dresses your bridesmaids will wear and how you’ll decide to style your hair.

The great part about choosing a suitable ‘do for your big day is that you’re never short of options; there are literally bucket loads of celebrity styles from which to draw your inspiration. So whatever kind of theme you’ve chosen or dress you’re wearing, there’s definitely a perfect hairstyle for you. We’ve gone ahead and gathered together some of the most popular (and show-stopping) bridal ‘dos for you. You can thank us later…

THE ‘POLLYANNA’

The style:  a pretty half up/half down ‘do that is equal parts pretty and sexy.
Great with: a strapless dress, or as a base for any bride that opts for a ‘downward veil’ (i.e. the one that travels down your back, not over your head.) Also perfect on brides who have a block hair colour who want to add a different twist to subtle waves.
Create it with:La Biosthetique Biosthetics Volume Mousse

THE ‘HIGH BROW’

The style: a neck-lengthening style that looks both elegant and striking.
Great with: a halter-style or backless dress. This glamorous up-do is also the perfect backdrop for an embellished headband or a set of knockout earrings.
Create it with: ASOS Grecian Leaf Hair Combs, $14.02, asos.com/au

THE ‘SWEET SIDE SWEEP’

The style: If you’re a fan of wavy locks, this sugary-sweet side style allows you to rock them in a more sophisticated way.
Great with: a one-shoulder dress as the ponytail acts as the other ‘strap’ of a one-shouldered gown. This style is also perfect for a beach wedding and as the foundation for a beautiful headpiece.
Create it with:VS Sassoon Ultimate 19mm Salon Curling Tong

THE ‘AUDREY’

The style: This Audrey Hepburn-style ‘do is seriously elegant and will add a degree of sophistication to your look in a nanosecond.
Great with: a feminine necklace or elegant earrings. This ‘do is also perfect if you want to go down the slightly more traditional, timeless path and is sure to complement a vast array of bridal gowns.
Create it with:Scunci French Twist Clip

THE ‘DOLLY GIRL’

The style: The ‘Dolly Girl’ ‘do is a great way to channel your inner princess – a major must for many brides. The finger-wave-style curls are designed to stay put longer than your average waves.
Great with: hair accessories or headwear. Don’t be afraid to ‘bling’ up your look with this style. The waves act as the perfect setting to show off your accessories.
Create it with:muk Curl Stick

THE ‘GWYNETH’

The style: Named after Gwyneth Paltrow’s sleek ‘do at the 2013 Oscars, this low-slung pony is perfect for any bride who wants to give the impression of a slimmer face.
Great with: a backless dress or one that calls for a demure ‘do that won’t steal the limelight.
Create it with: ghd Eclipse

THE ‘BOHO MILKMAID’

The style: This milkmaid-esque braid is equally as interesting as it is gorgeous. It’s perfect for a rustic themed wedding and boho brides alike. (Watch my DIY milkmaid braid how-to video here…)
Great with: a flowing or Grecian-style dress. It’s also the perfect frame for any veil.
Create it with:Models Prefer Professional Human Hair Extensions

THE ‘PRIM AND PRETTY’

The style: This soft curl style can be created with regular or finger waves. Simply pin them around your head with pretty accessories to make your hair looking flowy and beautiful rather than stiff and harsh.
Great with: a high-necked or ultra-feminine frock.
Create it with: Diva Rose, Pearl, and Diamanté Hair Pins, $9.99, diva.net.au

THE ‘BLAKE-TAIL’

The style: This boho braid is totally ‘new school’ and a far cry from your average big day ‘do. Many brides have considered this style for their own wedding largely because Blake wore it on the red carpet with a bridal-style white dress.
Great with: a straight-cut or embellished frock that has room for an extra shot of ‘wow’.
Create it with:Lady Jayne Fishtail Braid
