We spill our secrets for your best hair yet

We love gaining tips from industry experts (so much so, we created a Holy Grail full of them), but often the best secrets come from everyday women. Especially when dealing with something that’s incredibly different from person to person – like hair. What works for one mane might not work for another, but lucky for you (and us) the bh office is full of forty women, with forty different hair types, colours, styles – and all with a wealth of knowledge to share. Just LOOK at all the hair secrets we’ve been hiding:

“I have white blonde hair, so once a week and always on the same day I get my roots touched up, I lather every part of my hair from my scalp to my ends in coconut oil, leaving it for an hour or two. I’ve even forgotten about it once or twice and gone to the supermarket in my slicked-back bun… not a good look! Then after I’ve washed it out, I rinse my strands with cold water to seal the cuticles (which also feels really soothing on my head after the heat of the bleach!).” – bh’s Ally

After I’ve washed my hair, I blow-dry it about an hour later. This way it has dried for the most part naturally – and I only need to give it a little professional nudge at the end to make it sit right without inflicting too much heat damage. – bh’s Yelena

“Since going from a blonde to a bottle brunette, my hair priorities have completely changed. Now it’s all about keeping my colour looking glossy and vibrant, and my secret weapon for this is colour depositing treatments and conditioners. These genius products are designed to battle the inevitable colour loss that occurs with every wash (even when you use a colour saving shampoo) while providing extra nourishment to your hair. They’re the perfect no fuss solution for keeping my colour looking fresh between salon visits. I’m currently using fabuloso caramel by evo and loving it.” – bh’s Kim

“I often want to quickly tie my hair out of my face, but hate getting stuck with that awful kink that comes from a tied ponytail. Instead I gather my hair, twist it and loop it around into a quick bun, using a tie to hold it in place. This way it doesn’t leave any kinks so it still looks nice when I want to pull it back out again.” – bh’s Steph

bh tip: You can also try Lady Jayne Style Guards™, designed specifically to hold hair back without leaving kinks.

“My hair secret really only applies to girls who have naturally wavy hair (and like the look of it): I wash my hair at night, wrap it up wet in a towel to soak up some of the moisture, then let it out to air dry overnight while I’m sleeping. This means my pillow requires pretty frequent washing, but it’s the only way I can get my hair to dry wavy naturally, with minimal frizz and fly aways!” – bh’s Beth

“I love volume more than I love the feeling of silky hair, so to give my locks a head start (pun intended), I only use conditioner every third or fourth wash. It helps give my hair more grit, and stops it from slipping and sliding when I’m trying to style it.” – bh’s Astrid

I put a hair mask in before I go swimming and when I’m in the sun – it protects my locks while keeping them soft and healthy. – bh’s Kelly

“After washing, blow-drying and straightening my hair (that is about an hour of my life I will never get back) I put it in a loose pony tail for about half an hour. I have really thick frizzy hair so this helps keep the frizz out and gives a nice amount of volume to my hair.” – bh’s Di

“Instead of using a conditioner after shampooing, I reach for my hair mask instead. It gives me all the benefits of a conditioner, but with more nourishing, repairing and softening ingredients. It may take a few minutes longer, but it’s totally worth it.” – bh’s Rosie

“When I curl my hair I put it in a high pony tail, curl it with a curling wand and then take the ponytail out and comb through. It literally takes five minutes because I only need to do about 10 curls. And it always turns out awesome!” – bh’s Julia

“My hair is so thin that it air dries pretty quickly, but I do like to flick my hair upside down and blast the roots with a hairdryer for extra volume.” – bh’s Kate

I often sleep with my hair in a plait so it stays knot-free and I wake up with beachy waves! – bh’s Caitlin

“To prevent my hair from looking frizzy, I only brush it when it’s wet (and I only wash it every second day or so). I know that’s meant to be bad, but I don’t really notice any breakage or split ends!” – bh’s Carly

RELATED: How to seriously tame your frizz

“If you have short hair and want to quiff it, don’t condition your hair in the shower. The style is easier to achieve with gritty hair, and not to mention any products you use will be a lot more effective.” – bh’s Sophia

“Try not to put your hair up in a towel after showering, it can break your locks and leave you with uneven strands – it’s a hard habit to break but well worth it!” – bh’s Aja

“To help increase the shine in my blonde hair (not an easy feat!) I always run cold water through my hair just after conditioning and before I get out of the shower. The cold water helps to seal the hair cuticles, locking in the moisture from your conditioner and giving your locks some extra shine.” – bh’s Deb
