There’s a common misconception that hair oils are only suitable for thick, coarse hair. Why? Because it’s believed that fine, oily hair types will instantly become weighed down and greasy. However, with the right oil for your hair type, your mane will look shiny, feel strong and smell delicious.
As for how you use your hair oil? Well, that’s entirely up to you but trust us, you won’t be short of options. Whether you opt to use your hair oil as a leave-in treatment to condition damaged hair or a styling product to manage flyaways, this is the secret to hair that actually behaves.
So, while the application technique is entirely your call, allow us to influence your decision in terms of which hair oil you decide to take home with you.
What are the best hair oils?

TRESemmé Smooth Curls Hair Serum with Argan Oil
We say: Frizz-fighting friends rejoice! This oil-infused serum is here to manage your tresses and twirl your curls. Argan oil works to smooth frustrating flyaways, while also working to add much-needed moisture boost back into your strands.
You say: “I tried TRESemmé Smooth Curls Hair Serum with Argan Oil because I have wavy hair and over the years the curls have lost their bounce. I use this product on towel dried hair before I blowdry my hair and also on dry hair in between washes to create frizz free, sweeping curls. Perfect also for when I have my hair in a ponytail for lovely curls. The serum feels light and I love the added benefit of argan oil. My hair feels and looks moisturised, soft and healthy.” – samsy

Goldwell Elixir
We say: Can you go wrong with an elixir? We think not! Eliciting thoughts of near magical properties in our minds, this treatment has a lot to live up to. And boy does it. Not only does the luxuriously thick oil protect your strands, but it also works as a regenerative treatment. Simply slather in to control frizz, manage unruly strands and add a simply stunning shine to your tresses.
You say: “I find the oil to be a bit thicker/heavier than others I have used but this means I require less for the ends of my hair. I usually apply it on dry hair most mornings and evenings and once applied you can see the oil in my hair however it dries pretty quickly and leaves my hair looking shiny and feeling soft. It also tames my frizz and after several weeks of use my hair looks healthier and not as dry. You only need a small amount so it will last a very long time.” – Vi

Have you tried any of these hair oils? If not, which one do you use?
My hair personally doesn’t love coconut oil!
Same! Nice to see someone share this view.
I havent tried any of these except coconut oil but have definitely heard of the benefits of argan. The only one I haven’t heard of is abysennian, thats definitely a new one for me
That’s a new one to me too
Great article.
Very interesting, but as I said before only use shampoo and conditioner. Never tried oils
Fantastic hair oils, lovely ones to try and thanks bh! for a great read.
I have used Argan oil and love it but would try any of these
I have used hair oil brands for a long time. Never really seen them strengthen my hair. I use it to tame frizz and give my hair shaft shine.
interesting topic, keen to try Oribe
I used L’Oreal, OGX, Essano
I need that Wella hair oil in my life.
So many oils now
Yep, there are just so many products to choose from these days
Really love using Moroccan Oil and Argan Oil Spray as well. Such Wonderful Products.
I really like Moroccan Oil for helping contain some of my frizz
I have several hair oils but I haven’t used any of the ones listed
Never tried hair oils, why not use just the oil not in fancy bottles, be cheaper?
I have the OGX and I also use Kerastase.
These products all look lovely. I usually only use shampoo and conditioner.
Good to know, I wouldn’t mind trying some of these
Love to try the Oribe one, is it worth the money?
The one I liked got discontinued. I find it hard to find a hair oil that doesn’t grease up my already oily hair. Argan Oil is pretty good.
I use L’Oréal’s Elvive Extraordinary Oil. Bought it on special from Coles and tend to use in only on the ends of my hair.
I’ve never tried hair oil. My hair gets quite greasy as it is, so adding extra oil would be a recipe for disaster
Mine is the same, would never consider more oil
I prefer a leave in conditioner to oily hair
Wanna try oribe and virtue. Wella one is listed with the wrong price. Wella oil i used smells yummmm
I use Aveda, keeps my dry fizz looking great
good products
my hair dosent really like oil though
i wish i would have shiny hair
all of these products look easy to acsess!
my hair is always dirty
interesting artical
Hair oil doesn’t seem to make the slightest difference to my hair. It achieves nothing.
Why is that? You don’t find it is more moisturised?
I could never wear my hair pulled back like that
I used to use unrefined organic coconut oil as a hair mask and it was quite effective but I haven’t used it for a long time.
I love oil massage on my hair. I used coconut oil when i was young. But now often missing that routine because of busy lifestyle.
That was looking so amazing.
My fave is Elixir Ultime Original Hair Oil by Kerastase
Love the idea of hair oils but I never like how then sit on my hair, generally too weighty 🙁
I really like using argan oil on my hair. It is lightweight and easily absorbs into the hair meaning it doesn’t leave your hair feeling greasy or heavy.
I love coconut oil and would like to try the Aveda oil.
I haven’t tried any of these products surprisingly
only a little bit of oil in my fine hair
I would really love to try the Oribe one, but the price puts me off
I have tried OGX Renewing + Argan Oil. I would like to try other brands.
I definitely need hair oil for my dry ends.
I definitely need hair oil for my hair.
I haven’t used a hair oil before
I’ve never seen any real difference when using a hair oil, so I don’t bother now.
I’ve used hair oils before but didn’t think much of them.
Great article thanks for the info
