How Sandra Oh Achieves Her Signature Voluminous Curls

Sandra Oh’s voluminous curls can be considered her signature. Beyond her acting prowess, Sandra’s curly locks have become a trademark part of her aesthetic. As such, she’s mastered her curly hair routine to a tee.

2019 was the year that the Golden Globe winner changed the game, however. Debuting a fresh new fluffy fringe on the cover of Marie Claire, she sparked a new generation of shag cuts and textured bangs. Sticking with the uber-cool style to this day, Sandra continues to prove that bangs are not simply reserved for those with straight hair.

The Killing Eve actress manages to maintain perfect curls for her every outing and, boy, are we jealous. While her curl pattern sure is enchanting to start with, her tresses are not the product of magic. It’s all in her trusted haircare rituals, and we’re breaking down Sandra Oh’s entire haircare routine right here…

Sandra Oh’s haircut

Sandra’s routine all starts with her haircuts.

Regular trims are a non-negotiable aspect of the plan, preventing split ends and ensuring her curls remain vibrant. Her hair stylist Ted Gibson told Elle that he keeps things conservative with her trims.

“I always say women should change their hair at least a couple of times a year. It gives a little freshness and a little bounce in your step,” he said.

As for the decision to cut bangs in the first place, the stylist shared that Sandra was hesitant at first.

“We had this moment of, ‘oh, ooh,’ and she says ‘what are you thinking?’ and I said, ‘I’m thinking bangs,’ and she goes, ‘no!'” he told Elle.

“Next thing I knew, I was cutting the bangs on her. To think about how a woman can trust her hairdresser — I was really excited to be able to work with her and to give her something different.”

“Sandra’s beautiful. She has great eyes and a long neck, and I wanted to give her a different kind of feeling.”

“I think she was really inspired when I cut the bangs, because [they] gave her a new attitude. I like to think hairstyle changes everything.”

Sandra Oh’s haircare routine

In terms of actual styling, to enhance her spirals and get extra definition, Sandra’s hairdresser also uses a curling tong.

“A tong is my best friend. You’re only as good as the tools that you use. If you want great hair you have to have great tools.”

Ted uses the Hot Tools 24k Gold Curling Iron ($125 at Adore Beauty) in a number of barrel sizes.

Product-wise, Sandra’s hair stylist from Killing Eve, Lucy Cain, shared her on-set go-tos with Refinery29.

Of course, great hair starts with a clean canvas. Lucy shared that Sandra is a fan of the Aromatherapy Associates Balance Nourishing Shampoo ($53 at Be Heers) and Conditioner ($53 at Be Heers).

The stylist would follow up with the SachaJuan Leave-in Conditioner ($54 at Oz Hair & Beauty) and Shu Uemura Wonderworker Blow Dry Primer ($47 at Adore Beauty).

The true secret sauce to Sandra Oh’s curly hair routine lies in a discontinued product (cue the cries). According to Lucy, the actress referred to the Kerastase Nutritive Oléo-curl as “precious”. The brand’s present-day counterpart is the Curl Manifesto Crème de Jour Anti-Frizz Cream ($58.50 at Adore Beauty).
