Salma Hayek has officially solidified her place in our beauty-obsessed hearts (although it was never really up for debate). The incredible star really doesn’t look a day over thirty, so we often turn to her when trying to figure out the secret to ageing so gracefully.
Well, Salma has pretty well embraced mostly natural options when it comes to beauty. From her (controversial) lack of morning cleanse, to her decision to embrace her natural hair (whether it be curls or greys), Salma is riding the beauty wave where it takes her.
And although the superstar backs her decisions when it comes to greys, she still has moments where she wants to cover them up. But she doesn’t head to the salon to do so; she’s all about a DIY solution. Enter her super simplistic hair trick.
Salma Hayek hair products
In a recent Instagram post Salma (alongside her hairstylist Miguel Martin Perez) decided to drop her top tip to covering (and taming) grey hairs without any dye. The simple solution? Mascara. Yep, Salma whips out a tube of Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Push Up Lashes! Mascara ($48 at Charlotte Tilbury) – although any old tube will do – and proceeds to explain that cleaning off the wand and wiping it through your strands will not only give them a little tint (sans the dye) but also helps to put the ‘rebellious’ ones back in their place.
And for all the blondes (and lighter brunettes) out there, we know Salma’s trick might only work if you have darker hair. BUT, like Miguel does in the video, you can always give your colour a quick touch up with a root spray.
And there you have it, greys covered up quickly all with products you already have!

Do you cover your greys? Would you try this trick?
I use my brown brow mascara/gel to do this already.
That sounds so clever.
Ooh great it matches your hair colour
That’s a good tip!
Very good for regrowth if you want to delay colouring
I use hair mascara sometimes between my hair colouring sessions.
Yes I have done this before .
I used to but the grey does’nt bother me now. Their is hair mascara made specifically for covering grey hair.
Yes I have used that too and is very good and you can get it for good price
Would take a lot of mascara for my greys!
I just use in on part lines or obvious grey when I have stretching out re colouring.
Handy to know
Haven’t tried this before – good tip. Ive used the Loreal touch up spray and so far so good
I have blonde hair and consider myself lucky because the grey hair is not so noticable in blonde and almost looks like highlights.
Sounds quick and simple
My greys just blend into my highlighted blonde hair.
Haven’t got any greys yet but I think they look great
I love my grey’s! I stopped colouring my hair in 2018 and haven’t looked back.
This seems like so much upkeep.
I’ve tried a proper hair mascara, but I found the wand tangled in my hair. I love the root cover-up sprays.
I quite like my grey streaks
Root sprays would probably be better than mascara though I haven’t tried one before. Eye mascara would leave your hair feeling sticky, like hair mascara which I have used before.
I use Schwarzkopf hair mascara.
Yes, this sounds like a good fix for those with darker hair.
Interesting that is a good trick i have like 2 grey hairs and i know its going to get worse
That’s a great hack if you have black or brown hair
Great tips. I love it but I got alotmof greys now
I’m bracing myself – I’m planning to stop dyeing next year and go grey. Eeek.
She looks lovely
My mum uses mascara for her grey hair too
Hair mascara is the least messy way to keep your greys away. I’ve got a liquid, a spray and the mascara.
Just think of them as silver highlights
I’m blond, so wouldn’t work for me unless I wanted Cruella de Ville type stripes in my hair.
I really like my greys..although I don’t love the rebellious frizzy ones. Something I do have in common with Salma!
