Stop everything you’re doing because Portia de Rossi just got a perm. And in case you had prior assumptions about this ’70s and ’80s hair trend, it actually looks really damn good.
In fact, like the foam cleanser, we’ve since come to realise that perms have unfairly received a bad rap over the years. So, just as we’ve successfully shaken the ‘overly drying’ reputation of this once-feared face wash, it’s time to do the same for the perm.
Okay, but how?
Easy! Immediately scrap any thoughts of dense, poodle-like curls (no disrespect to any poodles that may be reading this) and think Julia Roberts in her Pretty Woman era meets a great set of beach waves. A stunning visual, right?
What we know about Portia de Rossi’s perm
While the process looks, um interesting, the final result is gorgeous.

“I am so impressed with Janine Jarman that I had to post the ugliest pic of myself getting a perm just to prove to you what a genius this woman is,” Portia wrote via Instagram.
“It’s vegan, my hair feels healthy, and no more hot tools,” she said of the patent pending formula owned by Janine’s company Curl Cult.
Since receiving the treatment, Portia’s hairstyling routine has halved. Forget lengthy blow dries and the admin of heat styling. “I air dry my hair and always have loose waves, no matter how humid it is outside,” she explained.

We know what you’re thinking. How much is she getting paid to say this?
Apparently zilch. This unsponsored post was purely motivated by the need to “let everyone know that I’m bringing the perm back”.
And with results like that, we’re happy to hear it!

What do you think about Portia’s perm? Have you ever gotten one?
I don’t like it personally
No it doesn’t do it for me at all.
Why not, if she really likes it.
Love this look. Not sure it reminds me of the usual perm though??
Perms seemed to disappear for a while, it’s good to see curls again, it looks more like wavy but her hair looks nice.
My hair sits like that if I let it dry naturallyz
I had perms through the 80s & I liked how it dried out my very oily scalp & hair, but I wouldn’t do it now.
Portia’s hair looks great!
It is not really a style as such.
I like this and think it would suit me but can I face a perm again? It’s been a long time!
That’s a great perm. If I could guarantee those results, I’d have one.
That’s what I was thinking too, I rarely wear my hair done as it requires so much extra effort. This look looks effortless.
Her hair looks lovely, I love easy, loose curls.
It’s not what I think of when someone says ‘perm’. I like it.
Looks just natural, relaxed style
My hair is already naturally curly and wavy so I don’t need a perm
Good for some volume
She looks like a surfy chick (meant as a compliment)
Oh, and instantly I can smell the disgusting smell of perm lotion! Still, for us fine-haired gals, the return of the perm is something to look forward to
But what are those things? Looks like some sort of mind reading device out of a ’50’ sci-fi flick
Not sure I would consider this a particular style.
I had a perm when I was 20 and with my thick hair I felt like a sheep.
I used to have that look in my teens and it wasn’t by a perm either. A la natural back then. It does look good on Portia but then anything she does looks good on her.
I don’t think it’s the hot tools frying her hair, I think it’s her strict vegan diet. Her hair probably isn’t getting enough nutrients.
As long as she likes it.
Really nice! Looks natural
I don’t like it.
I used to get perms in the mid 80s
Me too lol and I use to like it
Not a fan
looks great
Some hairdressers wont even do perms now
That’s certainly a better perm than the tight curls.
Most salons now don’t do perming
I just hear the word ‘perm’ and I can smell the lotion!
Seems like it works for her but would probably be awful on me.
So time consuming
I don’t think it suits me.
