How-to: find the perfect hair colour for your skin tone

If you’ve ever wondered why platinum blonde looks sensational on your fair-skinned bestie, yet does nothing for your medium-toned complexion, you’re not alone.

According to Wella Professionals Colour Club Ambassador Richi Grisillo, “when it comes to suitability and hair colour selection, your complexion is what can make or break the end result. As a whole, complexion encompasses eye colour and skin tone in addition to taking into consideration underlying pigments in the skin – no matter how light, tan or dark your skin is.”

Here, Richi helps you to discover which hair colour you should be rocking to best complement your complexion…

Warm complexion

Definition: any skin tone (fair, medium or dark) with ‘yellow’ or tan undertones. Those with warmer complexions generally tend to have deeper green or brown eyes.

Which hair colours should you go for?

These skin types suit golden blondes, amber tones, and redish-browns. A good example of a warm complexion and complementing colour is Jennifer Aniston. Richi says, “Whenever her [Jen’s] hair has gone too cool on the colour spectrum it adds years to her age – in comparison, a warmer shade does exactly the opposite and serves to make her appearance more fresh and her eyes brighter.”

Cool complexion

Definition: any skin tone (fair, medium or dark) with ‘pink’ undertones. Those with cooler complexions generally tend to have lighter green or blue eyes.

Which hair colours should you go for?

“Hair colours that enhance and complement these skin tones are cooler ashen tones, pale beige, violets and deeper brunette hues. These shade types work to make your eye colour pop and accentuate the porcelain like nature of fair skin.”

Neutral complexion

Definition: any skin tone with a combination of ‘warm’ and ‘cool’ undertones. Those with neutral complexions generally tend to have ‘cool’ skin tones with ‘warm’ coloured eyes.

Which hair colours should you go for?

Any! According to Richi you’re the lucky ones as you have a complexion that can carry warm or cool shades. But if you’re looking for a shade that suits you best, simply decipher which category your complexion predominantly falls into and go with a complementary shade, as listed above.

A final word from Richi:

“As a key rule, always remember to complement your skin tone, not match it!”
