I’m not exactly the adventurous type when it comes to my hair. In fact, I think I’ve sported the same blonde, fringed look since I was about…oh, five years old.
The only time I’ve ‘shaken things up’ is, predictably, just after a break up. And even then it was just a few inches off the length.
So I’m still not exactly sure why I decided to suddenly switch from blonde to brunette. But whatever the reason, I’m loving my new look. And kinda kicking myself for not doing this sort of thing more often.
So go on, take the plunge – jump head first into this season’s hottest hues for a hair overhaul on a whim.
We chat to Vincent Nobile, Colour Director at Paddington’s Headcase Hair about the latest trends and what to keep in mind when changing your colour…
What are the hot shades in hair colour this season?
Natural tones are the trend this season with the hottest hair hues being variations of taupe-browns, sun-kissed nutmeg, amber bronzes, and deep, coffee-browns.
Should we be going for bold, block colour, or a more natural finish?
Colour is transforming into blended variations, and the blurring of highlights to create a multi-dimensional effect. These soft shimmers of colour blend seamlessly into the lengths so that you aren’t sure where the colour really begins and ends. Think Alessandra Ambrosio with her taupe-brown base and varying soft, natural tones throughout (pictured, main image).
What’s the best way to achieve this look?
To achieve multi-dimensional colour and shine you definitely need the right colouring tools. For me, the new Wella Koleston Perfect Pure Line is the answer. Having no warm or cool tones, it sits as a true neutral in tone giving that super natural colour result. It’s also formulated with new technology and special light reflecting and light absorbing qualities to give the perfect amount of shine.
And how will I know what colours will suit me best?
Firstly, I can’t stress enough how important it is to go to a professional colourist if you want to change your colour. Everyone has different skin tones and eye colours so what suits one person, may not suit the next. If you visit your hairdresser they’ll be able to assess your complexion and customise your colour so that it complements your features.
Don’t fancy a huge hair overhaul? Try Vincent’s suggestions for simple, yet subtle changes…
If your hair is blonde:
Instead of going for a solid, dark colour, keep your highlights and work in some taupe and/or hazelnut tones. It will slightly alter the colour, while still maintaining the softness and subtlety of ligher hair.
If your hair is dark:
Give yourself an easy introduction to lighter hair by adding soft highlights throughout. Opt for honey, caramel and toffee coloured tones to lighten things up, without going too drastic.
If your hair is red:
For redheads that want to go lighter, I’d recommend bringing in nice copper or strawberry blonde hues, as these will still complement your skin tone. If you’re looking to go darker, consider shades such as mahogany or mocha brown which still have some warmth and redness in them so it’s not such a huge change.
