This past winter has had my hair feeling some kinda way – mainly, my scalp is cracking it about all the cold weather. Or maybe my scalp is cracking it at me for not taking better care of it. Y’see, during winter the air gets cold (just in case you haven’t experienced the season), which can cause your skin to get drier than normal. And it turns out that your scalp, being similar to the rest of your skin, is also affected by the chill.

Mine has responded to the weather by getting all flaky. Not like snowing-in-Aspen thick flakes or a major skin condition, but definitely a little smattering of what looks like dandruff. Only it’s not dandruff, as confirmed by my hairdresser – it’s just that my scalp is protesting against the weather (and potentially my lack of scalp self-care).
With it being Natural Beauty Month here at beautyheaven, we’ve been talking all things natural beauty products. One day, as I was whingeing about my scaly scalp, my colleague piped up and suggested that I try switching to a natural shampoo and conditioner.
As I usually am when it comes to natural products, I was sceptical. “Thanks babe, but I want something that’ll actually do something to my scalp!” I said, rolling my eyes skyward. But she insisted that trying a natural shampoo and conditioner might be better for my scalp, with more nourishing ingredients and less nasties. So I decided to give it a try, if not just to prove her wrong.
I chose to try the Grahams Natural Natural Shampoo and Conditioner because it’s one of the brands my colleague mentioned. Also because the packaging is super cute and says the product contains coconut and manuka honey, which sounds delicious. The products are designed for all hair types and I was especially curious about this, as I have fine hair that tends to get greasy quickly – so I tend to gravitate towards products that will give my hair a heavy-duty clean.
I jumped in the shower and began with the shampoo. The first thing I noticed as I dispensed the product into my palm was that it smelt amazing, just like real coconut. It was easy to lather throughout my hair, which is often my biggest gripe with natural shampoo, as sometimes the products are hard to work into the hair – but not this one! I shampooed twice and rinsed out.
Next came the conditioner, which had a similar coconut scent to the shampoo. I ran it through the ends of my hair and left it in for about five minutes to really let the product soak in. Given that one of the hero ingredients in both the shampoo and conditioner is manuka honey, I was worried it would leave my hair feeling heavy or sticky, but I was surprised to find that it didn’t
After washing the conditioner out and styling my hair as normal, I noticed my scalp was less flaky and my hair felt soft and surprisingly clean. I decided to give a go for a few more weeks and then I noticed that my scalp had no flakes anymore! Given that this duo are formulated for sensitive scalps, the soothing ingredients were able to calm my scalp while the natural ingredients worked to nourish my hair.
So begrudgingly, I admit I was wrong about natural shampoo and conditioner and I would definitely recommend this shampoo and conditioner duo to others. Here are some more great natural shampoo and conditioners that have been tried and tested by beautyheaven!

Have you used natural shampoo and conditioner before?
We use Graham’s body lotion but haven’t tried the shampoo and conditioner. Glow Lab’s Hydrating shampoo and conditioner is great for restoring hydration and shine to the hair, and hair oils are really good for both hair and scalp care.
I love coconut scented products, always makes me think of summer or being on holiday. I’d love to try out this shampoo and conditioner combo.
I have been using a lot more natural products these day and have changed to sulphate free shampoo.
Helpful article. Sounds worth trying and I would certainly like to avoid some of those additives that seem to be in so many products
