Okay, it’s a safe space here to share. Yes, we watch the awards shows and keep our eyes absolutely glued to the red carpets because we love to see all the glam ladies. Spying what makeup they’re wearing, what colour their nails are and how they’ve opted to twist and turn their strands always has us enthralled. But we’ve got a secret. We actually love seeing the men walk the carpet too, especially to see what type of grooming choices they’ve made. Sure, it’s not a crazy secret but the guys need to get some beauty love too, right? Right; that’s exactly why we did the research for you around what grooming buys reigned supreme on Oscars night…
The Brand The Stars Trust…
When it comes to men’s hair care products there are genuinely a tonne out there. So for two of the biggest names in the biz to both walk the Oscars red carpet with the same one through their strands says a lot about the quality of said brand. It’s got to be just that good. Bet you’re wondering what it is. Enter: American Crew. This man-friendly brand claims to have ‘every product a guy could need’. And apparently, they had just what two of the top A-listers were after. Let’s check out how Matthew McConaughey And Robert Downey Jr. had their hair styled…
Matthew McConaughey’s Oscars Hair
Alrighty, alright, alright… Ladies and gentlemen listen up and listen good (boy we sure hope you read that in his voice). Matthew has worn his curls on the longer side for a while now, and we love seeing how he chooses to style them, whether it be a slicked back look, or a shaggier style.
For the Oscars, Matthew and his incredibly talented hair stylist Marcus Francis opted for a split the difference kind of look; not quite sleek but not quite shaggy. So what did they use to achieve said style? On towel dried hair, Marcus took the American Crew Prep & Prime Tonic ($28.95 at Oz Hair and Beauty) to prep the hair and give it more manageability for styling.
Then to maintain McConaughey’s signature shape, Marcus added a small amount of American Crew Light Hold Styling Gel ($28.95 at Oz Hair and Beauty) and combed it back loosely before taking a diffuser to dry it into its wavy place.
To give Matthew’s hair a level of refined texture, Marcus used the American Crew Fiber Cream ($26.95 at Adore Beauty) across the back and sides. Then finishing the look off, Marcus took the American Crew Cream Pomade ($33.95 at Oz Hair and Beauty) to the tops of his tresses, giving them a moisturised, tamed, low-shine finish. And to make sure his hair still looked like it had movement, Marcus made sure to lightly move it around to soften the look.
Robert Downey Jr.’s Oscars hair
It was a huge night for Robert Downey Jr. Taking home his very first Oscar (can you believe it?), Robert undoubtedly wanted to look his absolute best. The jokester turned to his trusted long-time celebrity hair stylist Davy Newkirk to keep his bouffant bouncy and his sides sleek.
To start, Davy spritzed and combed American Crew Prep & Prime Tonic ($28.95 at Oz Hair and Beauty) through Robert’s damp hair to create a solid base for the rest of the style.
Then taking a 20 cent piece amount of product, Davy warmed up in his hands the American Crew Fiber Cream ($26.95 at Adore Beauty), making sure to really massage it in there from roots to tips. Davy loves using the Fiber Cream because it’s got a good medium hold and gives a silky matte finish.
To control the flyaways and direct the strands where he wanted them to go, Davy took a hairdryer to the look, even making sure to give the top of Robert’s hair some volume. Then using a small flat iron Davy gave the hair a bit more detail. Lastly, he added a small amount of the American Crew Matte Clay ($31.95 at Adore Beauty) which gave the final hit of dimension and hold, perfect for celebrating the big night.
So there we have it, American Crew Fibre Cream seems to have a serious hold over the best boys in the biz, and can we blame them? Their manes looked magnificent.
