Kate Hudson’s Hack For Healthy Hair Is *Super* Surprising

It feels pretty fitting that the basketball team Kate Hudson’s character Isla Gordon runs in her new Netflix show Running Point is named ‘The Waves’. Why? Because her waves are one of the greatest things in the entire show.

And don’t get us wrong: it’s hilarious and heartfelt in the exact right measures, but her hair remains a serious highlight. It’s the perfect shade of warm-but-not-too-warm blonde, it’s framed with the chicest set of curtain bangs, and it basically flows like Rapunzel’s.

So what goes into getting your hair to bounce and behave like Kate’s? Let’s find out. She recently spilled a few hair facts in a chat with Refinery29 and we made sure to take note…

Kate Hudson cut & colour

First, let’s chat colour. “I like a warmer blonde”, Kate confessed. “I started going to colourist Tracey [Cunningham] and she’s given me the most amazing warm blonde.” Warmth is something that comes naturally to Kate’s colour, in fact, so it’s no wonder it suits her. “I have so much red in my hair”, she confessed. “My natural colour [is] a dirty red blonde. I have a lot of copper.”

As for the cut, a little face-framing action is a signature of Kate’s. “Right now, my curtain bangs are grown out. But usually I like a little curtain bang, like a little wispy bang.” Length wise, she likes to mix it up, adding in some extra extensions when she feels like embracing a longer look. “My hair is super healthy but it’s probably [shoulder length]. I just change it with extensions when I want to or need to.”

Kate Hudson hair type

Kate’s hair in Almost Famous is definitely different to how it looks in Running Point – so where does her natural texture sit? “I’ve had hair that was unruly and defiant my whole life so I’ve just learned to go with it. I either have to diffuse my hair to make it curly, or blow it out to make it straight”, Kate shared of her hair journey and styling options.

Kate Hudson hair routine

If we got to ask any celeb one question, ‘how often do you wash your hair?’ would honestly be at the top of the list. Luckily, Kate answered of her own accord. “I used to go four or five days and not wash my hair,” she explained.

“But then I just [filmed] this movie where I had to wash my hair every day and my hair got so healthy. In the movie, I chose to use no extensions, nothing, it’s just my own hair. We used hot rollers and spray, and then I’d go home and wash my hair every night — and this was for like three months — and my hair got very healthy. I think it needs to be washed.” Interesting. And TBH, super surprising. But hey, anyone who uses bleach consistently and would describe their hair as healthy is someone we’re down to listen to. Especially if that person is Kate Hudson!

Kate Hudson haircare essentials

Wondering what this wash involves to get her hair feeling so good? We were too. “I love the Defy Damage shampoo ($49.95 at Oz Hair & Beauty) and conditioner ($36.50 at Oz Hair & Beauty)”, she shared. “The [Joico Defy Damage Protective] masque ($38.50 at Oz Hair & Beauty) is also good for anyone who colours their hair, which I do once a week.”

“I strongly believe that when your hair looks good, it really does change the way you feel about everything. A good hair day is much more important than a good makeup day. But it’s hit or miss for me. If I have to do my hair myself and it didn’t dry nicely, I’m going to put it in a bun. If it’s really not great, I’ll do a slick thing: I’ll take something like this [Joico Defy Damage Protective Shield] oil ($38.50 at Oz Hair & Beauty) that’s kind of weighted and moisturises your hair. I usually do a ballerina-type of bun.”

That’s not everything in Kate’s hair kit, either. “I like the big wig pins, they look like bobby pins”, she noted. “I just take my hair, twist it up, and pin it with that.” Want to get something similar? Try the BEoffer U Shaped Hair Pins ($14.99 at Amazon). “Then I like my big silk scrunchies, and I have a ton of those clips that keep my bangs out of my face,” Kate shared. We’re big fans of the Slip Large Scrunchies ($58 at Sephora) and Mermaid No Crease Clips Pink ($10 at Sephora); great for avoiding dents and keeping hair silky smooth and set just the way you styled it.
