There’s a common (and absurd) misconception that women who reach a certain age are better suited to short hairstyles. And though we’ve dismissed this notion many times, no one does it better than Julianne Moore. Just by existing, her thick and lustrous head of hair puts to bed any doubts people may have on whether your age should limit your hair length or style.
So how does she keep her hair looking this good? Well, up until now the only intel we’ve had has been ‘good genetics’. Classic. However, as the face of the latest Hourglass “We Glow” campaign (alongside her youngest daughter, Liv Freundlich), Julianne has revealed some of her greatest beauty tips (and faux pas).
And there’s one hair-related recommendation that’s really caught our attention. The Still Alice actor has shared her clever two-step routine for ensuring that her hair dries straight after a wash.
Speaking to The Sunday Times the actress revealed that though her hair is naturally wavy and she’s “terrible at blow-drying [it]”, she’s had to get savvy if she wants to keep it from going frizzy.
“I have a clever hack to make my hair dry straight,” she said. “I’ll wash my hair, put in hair oil and tie it back really tightly so the crown is tight.”
The result? “It will dry flat”. Some would say it sounds very straightforward (sorry, we had to).

Have you ever tried Julianne Moore’s hair hack? If not, do you have any tips of your own for ensuring your hair dries straight?
Owww yes I would try this I have the frizziest, wavvy hair and have had it relaxed or chemically straightened for years. Would love something to tame the frizz that was actually good for my hair. Will give this a go. ✨
Good luck Saffy -This would be much kinder on your hair. Hope it works for you
I want to try this but I am conscious that tying a very tight ponytail can cause hairloss and secondly I have very fine hair and they look oily if I use anything other than a small amount of conditioner or serum. Hair oil will certainly make them look oily. I wish I had slightly thicker hair
That was my thought about the tightness, too – & I’ve got oily hair too, so I only use hair oil on my ends.
I am worried about tying it back too tightly also.
I wouldn’t try this, it doesn’t sound like it would work well for my hair, plus straight hair doesn’t suit me..
It is a wonder she doesn’t get kinks from where she ties it back ? She looks stunning
That also crossed my mind.
That’s the first thing I thought too.
My thoughts exactly. No way I wouldn’t be left with a very distinct kink where the hair tie was
I’ve been doing this for about a year. It really does work.
It doesn’t really work for me since I have curly hair. I would need to put lots of gel and hairspray to get it straight
It sounds a simple solution but you’d think oil would make hair more oily.
Maybe I will have to try Argan Oil, it is a great product, I like it in shampoo. and conditioners
It worths a try, but my hair is quite thick so it will be still damp ….
Great hack, not sure how comfortable it would be to sleep in being so tight
Interesting, I’ve never tried this hack. I would usually use an anti frizz or straightening shampoo and conditioner to get semi straight hair.
My hair would have a big kink where the hair tie had been!
How cool that you can straighten wavy hair with a ponytail! (My hair is straight, so it always dries straight!)
I roll around too much in my sleep for this to work.
I will definitely pass on the oil.
My long and very fine hair would fall out if I put any oil near it or pull it in a very tight ponytail. No thanks.
This is about the only department I don’t need help with! My hair was born dead straight-a-mundo
mine too. I often wish I had some body and curl.
Doesn’t it leave a kink where the hair band is though? Mine does. I do love Moroccan oil though.
I love the colour of her hair.
Wow, you would need to have a fair bit of spare cash to buy Guerlain Abeille Royale Scalp & Hair Youth Oil-In-Serum. Very expensive
Yes, I just use Coconut Oil 🥥. If you do not add too much then it works the same! X
Tying hair back really tightly isn’t great if you have thinning hair, from experience!
My hair is naturally dead straight.
Seems like a lot of maintenance.
Kink free too? do not think so
Will give this a try next time
Gonna try this and see
My hair was dead straight until I hit my twenties. I like the wave it’s developed.
Nup, don’t think this trick is for me since I have oily/flat roots. It’d just make my hair look worse. (Although it looks not too bad when naturally slicked back.)
Hair youth oil, that’s given me a chuckle
Good tip! I will try it. My hair is coarse and frizzy so it just may work for me too!
Gosh, I need to try this. Mine is thick and wavy. It just looks frizzy. Once I put hair product in it, not frizzy. Then I wash the next day. What a waste.
Julianne Moore looks absolutely beautiful her Hair Colour suits her unfortunately I don’t have long hair all the same length to try this trick. But I do use Hair Oil Serum and it does make a difference especially to stop frizz.
I like the idea of hair oil, but not the tight pulling of the hair.
I like using hair oil but wouldn’t tie it tight, especially after a shower.
I don’t think this will work on the length of my hair. The top will be straight, while the rest will be frizzy mess lol.
oil will weigh hair down
Definitely worth trying – I have trouble blow drying too, and frizz is the bane of my life.
She looks amazing. Has anyone tried the Guerlain one? I’m tempted but its pretty pricey.
Sounds uncomfortable, I have to pull my hair back for work every day so I wouldn’t want to add more time! I am very happy for BH to give me the Guerlain product to trial!!
I don’t have this problem, it is always super straight, I wish it was curly!
I’m going for the opposite of this! My hair is so fine and flat I need all the volume and waviness I can get lol
Worth a try for a special occasion. Might be a bit hard on my hair to do it regularly.
Will definitely be testing this hack out. I hope its as easy as it sounds!
I’ve never tried any of these but would love to give them a go
Great hack but not for me
I like how she is straight to the point with her hair hack!!!
Interesting. Hope it works for those who try.
I have not tried any of these hair oils.I want to try this hack too.
I do this but minus the hair oil. It means that part of my hair dries straight until the part where it is tied up and that part remains wavy. I’ll have to see if adding hair oil makes a difference.
Part of my hair might not end up frizzy doing this, but then I’d end up with the big bump from the hair band- definitely would not look like Julianne’s fabulous hair!
Yes, I want my hair to dry straight! I’ll try this but I’m yet to be convinced that this idea will work on my frizzy wavy hair…
Woah!! Yes, I need to try this! X
