It’s hard to come by a beauty interview with Jennifer Aniston that doesn’t mention ‘The Rachel’. And yet, despite the haircut being such a ’90s phenomenon, it was really only featured in its purest form during one season Friends.
So, considering it didn’t hang around for long, what did Jen really think of it?
Well, we now have the answer thanks to Adam Sandler.
Did Jennifer Aniston like ‘The Rachel’?
It’s important to note that ‘The Rachel’ reached peak popularity around 1995. So that’s 28 years that Jen has been answering questions about her hair and that particular cut. She’s even capitalised on it by launching her own hair brand, Lolavie.
So trust funny man Adam Sandler to ask about it when she addressed him with, “What’s something you’ve always wanted to ask me?” during an interview with ET.
“‘The Rachel’, I know no one talks to you about that,” he joked. “I just wanna know, when you saw it in the mirror for the first time, did you say ‘this is it, this is the one I wanted, this is fantastic’?”
To which Jen responded, “I really did enjoy it when it first happened. Which we interpret as: “But I don’t enjoy it now”.
“When did you say I can’t do ‘The Rachel’ anymore?” he followed up.
“I just started growing it out,” Jen responded. “It was too hard because I couldn’t do it on my own. And I just looked like Roseanne Roseannadanna.”
In case you didn’t know, Jen’s natural hair is quite curly when left to air-dry. So you can imagine the havoc those layers would wreak before she had a hairstylist on speed dial.
It’s a lesson we’ve all probably learned the hard way; don’t commit to a cut if you’re going to hate the upkeep.

Did you ever try ‘The Rachel’? Or any other haircut you wouldn’t get again?
Jen always looks lovely but she doesn’t need hair styles that make life more time consuming.
Completely agree
It shaped her face really well. I’m not sure if I could ever pull that off. You’d need the right face shape and a really talented hairdresser who really knows how to create the perfect layers to suit.
yes she has a lovely face so the hair style is not so important
I wouldn’t have the patience to redo it on my own all the time
No I never tried this hair cut or style. I once got a fringe and immediately regretted it and couldn’t wait for it to grow out and I remember using bobby pins to clip it back until it did grow out.
I have a fringe and dont think I will every change it. Seems right.
I love my fringe too
I can’t imagine me not having a fringe.
I’ve always had a fringe, even when I was little. It didn’t suit me not to have one when I tried to grow it out. Now my fringe covers the lines on my forehead which is a bonus!
You are lucky to suit a fringe -I have a small forehead and it doen’t work for me
I doubt many people could pull off the Rachael. It’s definitely a unique cut.
Never did but I do love watching Friends!
It looked great on her.
No, never liked layers. Ok on her.
I’m surprised that her hair is naturally curly! I’ve never seen her hair when it’s not straight.
Me too, I can’t imagine her with curls
It must be annoying for her when there are so many other things she’d probably want to talk about. It looked great for the time (and probably would now too) but if it’s too much work then it’s gotta go!
Totally agree Lindylou
I have never tried.
I’ve never tried The Rachel but my shortish hair has always been cut in layers.
My biggest hair mistake was getting a perm so I could have curly hair. I look back at the photos and cringe now.
Isn’t it funny that when we have straight hair we want it curly and if we have curly hair we want it straight??
I did that once and boy did I hate it . I felt like a sheep
I also had a perm when I was much younger, but it didn’t work at all on my hair. Should’ve realised then that my hair doesn’t hold styles very well. :o(
I think it only suited her at the time.
Wonder if Jen Aniston has had her hair straightened with Straightening Treatments I know if my hair gets really frizzy sometimes nothing helps accept an updo 😊
I get my hair straightened when I get it done, I air dry my curly dry hair at home, so it never looks as good as when I leave the salon.
My daughter has the most beautiful hair. Curly and blonde. But she likes to straighten it all the time and complains when it is humid because it curls more and more.
I had no idea she has naturally curly hair
I’m surprised she had naturally curly hair too. The “Rahel” does frame her face well.
It looks great but I wouldn’t have the patience for the upkeep.
I tried really short hair ages ago, it doesn’t suit me at all, never again.
Id never do the Rachel, and im glad i’ve never tried it either.
I haven’t I was only 8 at the peak time of popularity. Suits her though.
I once had a blunt fringe & chest-length hair ala Lily Allen from the video clip for her song “The Fear”. Even took a screenshot of that into the salon to show the hairdresser what I wanted (was the first & only time she gave me the exact cut etc I wanted).
Would never get a blunt fringe again because of the upkeep, but don’t mind having the curtain fringe I have now. Would also never get a perm again, nor do a keratin straightening treatment. Neither work on my hair due to its porosity & possibly some other factors. It’s hard enough getting my hair to hold ANY style, let alone anything semi-permanent.
I would imagine having a lot of imitators would put you off a cut fairly quickly too.
Looks like it would be hard to maintain
It was nice at the time but not for her now
It suited her and looked great, but I prefer my hair longer.
It actually looks a little dated, now, tbh
