Are you an every dayer? An every second dayer? Perhaps you’re a once a weeker? Whatever the answer, you must have a reason for it, right? Following a hair washing routine that best suits you is crucial. Though sometimes we’re stuck in a regimen that mightn’t be the best fit for our hair.
So, despite glancing at our hair and assessing whether it looks like it needs a refresh, what’s the best way to determine how often you need to be washing your hair? Well, it all comes down to these four little factors.
Without further ado, let’s assess how to perfect your preferred hair washing schedule.
#1 How active are you?
Do you go to a daily spin class? Well, if you’re drenching your roots to ends in sweat, washing your hair every day is going to be essential.
For those who don’t work up a major sweat can get buy with a top up of dry shampoo like the A’kin Dry Shampoo ($14.49, Chemist Warehouse).
#2 What is your hair type?
If your hair is fine, you’ll need to wash it more frequently. Why? Because when there’s not much hair to soak up or disperse the oil, the tiniest amount of grease or sweat will make a visible impact. On the flip side, those with thick, coarse or curly hair can often go up to a week (sometimes even 10 days) without their hair looking even remotely greasy. In fact, these hair types can often benefit from the natural oils that the scalp produces as it provides moisture to coarse hair.
#3 How oily is your scalp?
Our scalp is an extension of our skin. Which means, it can produce oil and also, some will be oilier than others. This can be the difference between a weekly wash or washing our hair every other day.
If you find your hair to be particularly greasy, we recommend using a clarifying shampoo that has been formulated specifically to soak up excess oil. Better yet? Throw in a weekly scalp scrub while you’re at it.

#4 How much product do you use?
For some, the extent of their hair routine involves a quick brush and nothing else. For others, there’s a lot of styling involved. Whether it’s dry shampoo, texturising spray, pommade, mousse, hair spray, volumising powder or an oil, for some, you name it and it’s been lathered on.
And though the end result is nothing short of stunning, it can often mean our hair needs to be washed more regularly.
How frequently do you wash your hair?
Chrystalage Yes I have had every test imaginable but they still haven’t found out why I have excessive weight loss.

Thats about my routine as well. Sometimes it depends on whether or not I am going out or not.
Twice a week is fine at the moment while it’s cold. In Summer it depends on how often I get the greasies. I can’t wash too frequently because it irritates my scalp.

2-3 times a week for me, depending on the state of it. Nothing more than that or it is excessive. I don’t use dry shampoo or the like to sustain between washes as my scalp is sensitive.
Every second day in the summer time, every third day in the winter.
It also depends on the weather. When humidity is higher my hair needs more frequent washing. My hair tends to be dry with an oily scalp. I need to be careful also not to irritate my scalp
I wash my hair every day and fortunately no problems with my scalp or condition of my hair.

If your hair is fine, you’ll need to wash it more frequently. Why? Because when there’s not much hair to soak up or disperse the oil, the tiniest amount of grease or sweat will make a visible impact. So now I know why my hair needs to be washed so often and my friends with lovely thick curly hair do not!!
My hair is fine & limo. I find I need to wash it every alternate day.

I used to wash my hair each morning but now that it is more dry and coarse, I have reduced my hair washing quite a lot.
