I think my hair might have PMS. Well, that’s the only theory that I can think of to explain the hormonal hissy fit that leaves me looking strung out and overloaded with oil just as I’m least emotionally equipped to cope with a bad hair day.
I’m thinking it’s the follicular equivalent of a chin breakout. After all, your scalp’s just an extension of your skin, right?
“Yes, definitely,” said hairdresser Alan Coban, when I quizzed him about my monthly mane freakouts. “A lot of people pay great attention to the skin on their face and body but unfortunately forget about the scalp.
“Some hormones, such as androgen, cause the sebaceous glands, which are connected to the hair follicles, to produce extra oil. The production … is often triggered by stress and other hormonal changes.”
So while I’ve got salicylic acid working on the skin on my chin (and a family block of Cadbury doing double time on emotional issues), what can I do to rebalance my hormonal hair? Alan’s advice: “It’s great to use a scalp detoxing shampoo at least once a week. This also helps to remove product build-up and improves the general condition of your scalp and hair. Also, when using conditioner, try focusing on the mid section and ends only – these areas need the most attention anyway.”
But stuck-to-your-scalp greasy flatness isn’t the only way hormones can wreak havoc on your hair. Some girls get dry and even itchy heads. “I would recommend a scalp nourishing treatment and mild, nourishing shampoo,” says Alan. But if your scalp’s really acting out, he warns against self-diagnosis. “It’s best to discuss this with your stylist or dermatologist – they are professionals in this field and know exactly what your scalp needs.”
Then if all else fails, at least there’s the eternally chic ballerina bun. There’s nothing like a heavy duty elastication for disguising lacklustre (they’re not lack, they’re smooooooth!) or unruly locks, is there? It’s a big hunk of chocolate for hormonal hair – works every time…
