Japanese women have previously attributed rice water as the secret to their floor-length, healthy hair, and it’s even been linked to the Yao women in China, who tend not to go grey until their 80s.
Rice water has more recently shown up as a superhero ingredient when it comes to skin care, with Japanese luxury skincare brand, Tatcha, using rice water in one of their best sellers The Rice Polish: Classic ($104, Mecca).
However, the benefits to our hair health have flown a bit more under the radar… until now.

- Bowl
- Strainer
Method
- Rinse rice thoroughly
- Place rice in bowl and cover with water
- Leave to soak for 30 minutes
- Strain rice water into a clean bowl or vessel, ready to use
- Take your rice water to the bathroom. Shampoo and rinse your hair, then pour the rice water over your hair. Leave to soak for up to 20 minutes and then rinse. No need to condition afterwards.

I like Indian food, so I cook rice fairly often. I’ll have to try this!
Hubby wil think I’ve lost my mind…..
I have heard of this before and quite common with Asians, but I think I will pass for now.

I have knotty hair so I might be tempted to try using rice water for detangling. I’d like to know if rice water contains protein because protein in hair products makes my hair brittle and straw-like.
wonder if this works, would be such an easy and affordable hack!
Reading through this, no comments from anyone who actually did try this. I certainly won’t as I think I would want to wash my hair well after putting starchy water over it.
Well I have never heard about the rice water benefits for thinning the hair humm that might be good for hair but I don’t have any idea about it for hair loss I would recommend Islamabad FUE hair transplant for hair permanent hair loss treamtent.
I would try it before i make a decision whether or not it works. Interesting.

I wonder if this would help balding since the magnesium stimulates the growth?
That’s an interesting question CCW!
