When it comes to hair curling, people tend to fall into one of two categories: king of curling or total klutz.
It’s not your fault, it’s just that curling is a bit like hula hooping – you’re either a natural or you’re not. However, just like with anything that requires skill (like hula hooping), it’s something that can be taught – if you’re diligent in your training and follow the rules, that is.
Check out the seven hair curling mistakes you make every single time (and how you can become the king of hair curling…)

#1: forgetting to prep
Forgetting your heat protection serum is an easy mistake to make, but it’s one habit you need to break – unless you want your hair to.
#2: curling in the wrong direction
We’ve all done it too many times. Whether we were in a rush or just not concentrating, we end up with an untidy, unkempt mess of curls. Ideally, you should be curling away from your face, which means you will need to change the direction on either side of your head.

#3: not allowing curls to ‘cool’
You might want to brush through your curls to make waves or fix wayward curls straight away – but unless you wait for your locks to cool, you’ll end up with limp, un-curlable strands. This is particularly true if you’ve pinned your curls in place (like Erin, above) and taken them out before they’ve completely cooled.
#4: trying to curl large chunks of hair
Taking too much hair at once is a thankless task. The heat will not be able to penetrate all the strands, leaving you with wilting curls. Section your hair carefully and curl small sections at a time for the best results.

#5: holding the iron for too long
We’ve all seen the YouTube video of the poor young girl who burnt her hair right off her head, and we’ve all come close to the same fate. When you hear sizzling, it’s time to worry. Try using a curling wand with varied heat settings, and depending on the thickness of your hair, use a lower heat setting, say 170°C. We love muk Curl Stick as it has adjustable temperature settings (unlike the wand the girl below was using – ouch!) and three barrels, for three completely different looks!

#6 too much/too little hairspray
Just like Goldilocks with her porridge, it’s important to get your hairspray quantities just right. If you don’t spray enough, you’ll be dealing with curls that fall out into unfavorable kinks and if you use too much hairspray, your hair will adopt that crispy, stiff, pageant look.
bh tip: opt for a hairspray that brushes out easily, that way it doesn’t matter if you go a little over the top with the spritz. We love Schwarzkopf Extra Care Ultimate Keratin Hairspray for that very reason.
#7: curling too lightly
No matter how easily your hair takes curls, you can never ‘over-curl’ your hair, as your ‘do will always drop. If you’re going for a beachy, boho wave look, curl your locks into Shirley Temple-style ringlets, allow them to cool and brush through thoroughly with a paddle brush. Yep, the ‘dos that seem the most carefree are often the ones that take the most preparation!
Got all of that? Brilliant – now rock those curly locks, ladies.
