If cutting your hair is something that truly terrifies you — you’re not alone. And it’s not superficial or silly. Cutting your hair is a big deal, especially if you’re thinking about making a dramatic change or have endured a bad haircut in the past.
But if lately, you’ve been thinking, “what would I look like with a fringe?” and the question just won’t get out of your head, we’re here to help.

This kind of chop requires a lot of commitment, so before diving straight into the deep end with a pair of scissors, there are (of course) a few things to think about. Get it right, and a fringe will be the best damn thing you’ve ever done.
So if a face-framer is piquing your curiosity, here’s what to do to find out if a fringe will suit you:
STEP 1: Find your face shape
There are a hundred things to consider before making the chop, and your face shape is number one. Knowing the curves and edges of your face will help you to determine a) whether a fringe will suit you and b) what kind of fringe is right for you.
Lucky you! Oval face shapes are an ideal canvas for fringes, and as for the most flattering cut? A long and thick fringe that hangs just above your eyebrows.
A long, thin and layered fringe works best. A short fringe will only accentuate your boxy features. It’ll also put you in the same league as these leading ladies. Case in point.
Go the gringe. Since it’s a long side-swept fringe that melts into the rest of your hair, it’ll help to elongate your face.
To balance your pretty heart face, opt for a fringe that is slightly shorter in the centre and longer at the cheekbones, like the curtain fringe. Alternatively, a short side-swept fringe will draw attention away from your pointy chin and towards your eyes.
A long and straight fringe that stops just above your eyes will work to shorten the length of your face.
Rounded bangs that are thin and textured at the edges will fill in the narrow top of your head without drawing attention to your square jawline.
STEP 2: The fake fringe
Once you’ve discovered what fringe type will suit your face, use the fake fringe test to see if getting the snip is really worth it. Test out your faux-fringe as follows:
- Tie your hair up in a high pony.
- Drag your hair up over the top of your head so it falls to the front of your face.
- Use your free hand to spread and style your chosen fringe type.
- And voilà, you have a fringe!
Top tip: If you want to see what the fringe would look like with your hair out, only tie up the top section of your hair.
And if you do like the look of it but still don’t want to commit to a cut, perhaps a clip-in fringe is the answer. Temporary and easy-to-use, we recommend the Clip On Fringe Hair Piece, $29 from medusaaustralia.com.au.
Have you had a fringe before? Would you get one again?
Oh I cut my own fringe last week!! And it’s pretty good!
I have it before makes your face looks younger
I had a fringe when I was young , I looked like a had a mullet, I prefer myself without a fringe.
Every so often I convince myself I want a straight fringe but only need to look back at old photos to remind myself it’s a solid ‘no’.
I have had a fringe in the past, it was DIY cut and it turned out beautifully. I liked it but my hair is fine, so I needed to use heat to make it sit right. The other downside of a fringe is when you decide to grow it out. A few months back, a hairdresser suggested a side fringe for me (like she had – it looked amazing on her) but she started the fringe quite short (unlike hers) so it kinda popped upwards instead of downwards. I know, I should have mentioned my fine hair but if she’d cut it the same length as her own, it would have been fine. Anyway, I walked away sad and hair sticking up oddly. I think she made other mistakes behind my head because she said, ‘Oh noo…’ and quickly included, ‘I’ve made you look younger haha’ . I won’t be back. haha
Love this
I do a partial layered fringe which I can brush back if I want
The number of times I have sat in a hairdresser’s chair determined to get a fringe only to chicken out at the last minute. Is it really that big a life decision?
Love the look of the long side-swept fringe… One of my faves!
I haven’t had a fringe for years now but would love to have one.
I miss my fringe, it is great to change styles
A great guide to fringes for all faces! The last time I had a fringe was as a 6-year-old though lol and whilst I love the variety, having oily hair against my acne-prone skin would be a big no-no for me. That and I can’t stand having hair on my face, drives me crazy not being able to tie it back haha.
This is a great guide as I love the fringe look.
love a fringe but my skin is super oily, a fringe just aggravates it even more
Mmm I’m thinking about getting a fringe. I had one before many years ago, I recall it was a pain to grow out though
Lol I do this all the time even though I already have a fringe
HAd it when a kid. No, will not, hard maintenance plus it hides the face and it is in the way always. Do not want skincare ending up being soaked by the fringe haha
I never knew there were so many different face shapes to consider for a fringe
Just reported Benjamin1123 comment as spam
I’ve had a fringe forever. I have an oval shaped face and my fringe is long and full and sits on my eyebrows.
I have curly hair, so it’s a bit hard to have a fringe,
I agree with you wholeheartedly.
With curly hair, just cannot do a fringe.

Fringes are really hard to maintain!
Sounds good!
I reported Benjamin1123 & Alicgmood10 on the spam thread, so hopefully, they’ll be removed now.
i like a fringe, but mine always grow so fast
The fringe just doesn’t suit me ….
I would love a fringe as I have a high forehead however it just doesn’t work here in the heat of Brisbane during the summer. It just becomes a sweaty mess. I part my hair on the side and have some of my hair across my forehead. Best I can do!
I had a fringe for a long time. Now I don’t. I much prefer not having my hair over my face.
Fringe would annoy me when exercising.
I’ve reported the spam on the page.
Fringes are really annoying to grow out if you want to change them.
I never had one. Would love it one day for a change.
I need my fringe. I have a high forehead, and now this is becoming dominated by those terrible lines that occur when we get older. Wisdom Lines?
I haven’t had a fringe for years. I’d consider getting one again if I found a great hairdresser.
I’ve reported the old spam by Alicgmood10, Priti_Shah and dharaadhikari02 (further back for this article).
Have had one a lot during my life – especially when very young but not now for the last 13 years or so. I would do a fringe now because I like to change things up and it will grow out anyhow.
a one sided ‘fringe’ suits me okay
I wanted a change so went from a side parting to a fringe and love it.
Im told i look years younger which is great!

I have days when I wished I had a fringe but I might just stay without one for now.
My curly hair doesn’t really stay in a ‘set’ fringe shape, it just curls all over the place!
I like it as it covers my scars
