Guilt-free beauty

Racking your brain to try and justify your latest beauty buy? Even the biggest beauty junkies are prone to feeling that teensy-weensy bit guilty when they purchase yet another product that they don’t really need.

Well you can put those feelings of guilt aside – because these great brands all run enviro-friendly initiatives, so purchasing their products means helping to sustain our environment!

L’Occitane

From its very inception, L’Occitane has been a socially responsible company. It has initiated a sustainable development program in Burkina Faso around the production of Shea butter, introduced Braille labeling on its packaging, and also created the first large-scale organic immortelle plantation in Corsica.

Since 2006, the L’Occitane Foundation has supported three causes in particular – literacy and support for women in developing countries; the fight against blindness and assistance for the visually impaired; and finally, the preservation of threatened traditional cultivations.

Lush

Global demand for palm oil (a main ingredient in processed foods, as well as soap and cosmetics) and the subsequent increase in palm oil plantations, is causing the clearing of ancient rainforests, forcing indigenous people off their land and pushing orangutans to the brink of extinction.

To launch the public awareness campaign about this issue, Lush has partnered with the Australian Orangutan Project (AOP), who work to raise awareness of the need to preserve Orangutan populations in their natural habitat. Lush have also decided to switch its soap base from palm oil to other more sustainable oils, from sustainable sources.

Aveda

Aveda is the first beauty company that offers aerosols with net-zero climate impact. Through a partnership with Native Energy, Aveda is funding renewable energy projects to ensure that Aveda Control Force™ Firm Hold Hair Spray and Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray offset the CO2 associated with the manufacture, transportation, and use of every Aveda aerosol hair spray sold globally.

Throughout Aveda Earth Month (each April), Aveda also runs initiatives to raise money and awareness for communities around the world in need of fresh water.

Burt’s Bees

At Burt’s Bees they’re not only concerned with how you use their products, but also with what happens to them once you’re finished using them. All Burt’s Bees products are biodegradable and its packaging is based on post-consumer recycled materials, which is then either biodegrable or totally recyclable. Its product labels are also printed with vegetable-based inks to ensure that no harmful inks go back into the environment.
