If you’ve just visited the hairdresser for a root refresh, then you’re likely wanting to preserve that ‘just left the salon’ look for as long as possible. One sure-fire way to extend the life of your colour? Put down the scalp scrub.
According to hairstylists, this common hair care product is actually the culprit of fading freshly applied colour, particularly to grey hair. So, while the right shampoo and conditioner can work alongside your colour to boost, brighten or maintain, scalp scrubs aren’t always your friend when it comes to extending the life of your recent root touch-up.
“The job of a scalp scrub is to exfoliate the skin,” said celebrity stylist Jay Small. “Because the protein structure of the skin and the hair are similar, if these ingredients can remove build-up on the scalp, they may also have the ability to remove colour from hair strands if used within the first weeks of colouring,” he told Well + Good. And that ladies and gents, is not a path you want to go down.
Does this mean we have to breakup with our scalp scrub for good?
No! Of course not. However, it’s recommended that you don’t use one until right before your next colour appointment. Why? You’ll be cleansing your scalp and ensuring it’s best prepared to absorb a fresh lot of dye.
In fact, according to celebrity hairstylist, Tom Smith, “there is some evidence that using a scalp scrub [before your appointment] can actually contribute to effective grey hair coverage thanks to the deep cleansing nature of the product removing any potential product or mineral buildup that could inhibit dye delivery into resistant grey hair.” Okay, got it.
Have you been using a scalp scrub on your freshly coloured grey roots?

Good advice especially given how much a visit to the hairdresser costs.
Yes you want to get the most out of each visit
Handy information to know.
Good tip.
Good to know!
Have never used a Scalp Scrub before but I agree it certainly would strip away the Colour from your hair.
Me either Margi
I haven’t used a scalp scrub either
Scalp scrub by Sukin is great! : )
I haven’t used a scalp scrub in ages. My most recent hair dye has lasted a couple of months and the greys are only just now starting to appear.
I have never used a scalp scrub but I’m thinking maybe I should try it (don’t have a coloured root issue).
I have never thought of using one and don’t have a scalp problem so don’t know what they achieve
I’ll try the scalp scrub tip prior to my next hair appointment.
Makes sense I think
I have not tried a scalp scrub 0 I just use a hand held silicone massager which is much more gentle.
I have one of those too and I do find when I use it, my hair gets less greasy between shampoos and I don’t need to shampoo as often – I’m finding the scalp scrub does a similar thing and has a similar effect. 🙂
That’s interesting to note, I don’t use a scalp scrub very often though
I don’t even own scalp scrub.
I think mine was a GWP by Sukin – it’ great and better than the more expensive one that I’ve owned and used once. Prefer my Sukin!
Well it would be like using a body scrub on your fake tan, a big no-no
Makes sense.
I didnt even know there was scrubs for scalps :/
Yes and they feel so good! Sukin make a really good one! 🙂
I don’t currently use a scalp scrub, but I’ve been thinking about them. I want my greys to stay hidden, so I’ll heed this advice. Thanks, Bh!
Luckily I have not had any trouble with grey hair. My hair is fair and there a few grey streaks, but I think I am the only one who can see them
I’m a bit the same Normap
Never used a scalp scrub before. I do colour my hair so it’s good to know.
That’s extremely interesting. I didn’t even know scalp scrup existed.
Good to know thanks
I’ve never used a scalp scrub.
No greys here. Didn’t use scrub in ages on my head
I haven’t either – I use it every now and again. xo
Have never used a scalp scrub but might
Thanks for the tip, makes sense.
This is good to know, but not a problem I have had to worry about just yet
Lucky you
This wouldn’t have occured to me, and yet it makes so much sense now you say it. Probably affects all dyed hair this way.
Yes I expect so
I have never uses a scalp scrub however don’t use a harsh shampoo on your hair like dandruff cleansers as they also fade the colour
A scalp scrub is something I don’t use, but my colour lasts six weeks.
Thanks for the tip!
Makes sense really! I occasionally touch up my roots at home but haven’t done it for months as I don’t have a lot of greys. I love using a scalp scrub but haven’t done that for a while either.
ooh I’ve just spotted one in the Rewards room by Grow. will put that on my wishlist!!
I don’t use scalp scrub ..
Great advice.
Good to know.
I don’t use a scalp scrub, but it sounds like a handy product to use before colouring hair
Didn’t know this. A great tip for future reference.
Not something I use anyway.
Great advice will remember to do this next time just before I touch up my greys
I use a silicone massager instead of a scalp scrub.
Clearly living under a rock, I didn’t even know there was such a thing!
Not sure whether I’d use it
Yes, definitely it is no doubt a very good idea to visit the hair specialist for better advice and treatment as well hair restoration clinic Islamabad
oh okay interesting, I’ll keep this in mind. I don’t use much scalp scrubs but I do own one at the moment
Good to know.
I haven’t used this type of product for a while, it was drying out my hair too much 🙁
