Hot-weather hairstyles to try if you’re sick of sweaty strands

Summer calls for easy, sweat-proof hairstyles that take seconds to create, but look like the work of a pro. And don’t get us wrong, we love a good slicked bun as much as the next sweaty person, but there are countless other ways to cool down this summer – and look chic while doing so!

This season, master these sleek ponies, fuzzy buns and bouncy waves so you too, can look polished on even the hottest days of 2020.

THE TOUSLED TOPKNOT (Hailey Bieber)

Seeing as there’s absolutely zero chance we’ll be slaving over a straightener in this scorching weather, it’s safe to say we’re after something that requires little to no styling. Salt spray is the secret to this look – just spritz in, twist up and secure with a tie, leaving some softening face-framers free.

You’ll need: JUSTICE Professional Sea Salt SprayLady Jayne Snagless Hair Elastics

THE WET LOOK (Kim Kardashian)

In lieu of a blow-dry, turn down the heat and become the ultimate beach babe this party season. This supercool style is as low maintenance as it gets – just as long as you have the right products (and wet-look hair know-how) on your side.

You’ll need: VO5 ® Wet Look Styling Gel, Schwarzkopf Extra Care Styling Body & Texture Texturising Spray, ghd air® hairdryer

THE LAX PLAIT (Margot Robbie)

Margot is the ultimate Aussie-babe muse, and this look is a knock-out for summer. Keep things modern and casual with this effortless look: French braid for two stitches, then switch to the classic three-strand the rest of the way down.

You’ll need: Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine Spray, ghd Tail Comb, Fudge Big Hair Bodifying Style Whip

THE HIGH-VOLUME HAIR (Gigi Hadid)

Teased tall and brushed smooth, this look has a Lauren Hutton circa 1970s vibe that’s both glam and effortless. It might look like a bit of extra work, but that additional effort will pay off when you hit that summer soiree looking fab.

You’ll need: TRESemmé Youth Boost Fullness Emulsion Spray, Remington Proluxe Salon Hair Dryer, Moroccanoil Boar Bristle Round Brush 35mm, ghd curve® soft curl tong, TONI&GUY Glamour Firm Hold Hairspray, L’OCCITANE Aromachologie Heat-Protective Control Mist

THE SLICKED PONY (Bella Hadid)

Fight frizz like a warrior (or model) would for a style that adds a touch of ‘fierce’ to the summer fun. Brush gelled hair back into a high pony and secure. Yes, it’s that simple. Bonus points if your ends level out to a blunt line.

You’ll need: Lush Zest Hair Gelly, Mason Pearson Handy Pure Bristle & Nylon Mix (Medium), L’Oréal Professionnel Tecni.ART Crystal Gloss

THE BRIGITTE BARDOT (Doutzen Kroes)

Skip the morning ‘shampoo and blow-out’ routine on extra balmy evenings. Instead, hit the roots with texture spray, tease and then pull the front sections loosely back. FYI – this works especially well on hair that’s been curled a day or two earlier.

You’ll need: De Lorenzo Elements Sandstorm Dry Texture Spray, Lady Jayne Tail Comb, muk Curl Stick, Redken Body Full Instant Bodifier

THE ORIGAMI BUN (Jessica Alba)

On those days when you’re totally fed up with hair brushing your face, get this look in your repertoire. Pull your ponytail almost all the way through on the last loop, leaving the ends of your hair out of the bun. Then, stiffen the ends with hairspray and if you’re feeling fancy, wrap it all up with a black velvet ribbon – because bows are back, baby.

You’ll need: Avon Advance Techniques Lotus Shield, Aveda Air Control Hair Spray

THE ‘NO FUSS’ CLASSIC (Toni Garrn)

If baby hairs are your summer gripe, shellac the front sections of your mane and pin them tightly behind your ears. It’ll get the hair off your face and out of the way of any summer plans.

You’ll need: Richard Ward Anti-Ageing Argan Hairspray, Scunci No-Slip Grip Bobby Pins, ghd final shine spray

THE ROCKSTAR (Georgia May Jagger)

You only need to know how to do two things to get the supermodel’s rock n’ roll waves: plait and sleep. To get that beachier effect, spritz some sea salt spray onto damp hair before plaiting.

You’ll need: Gliders Snag Free Hair Elastics, John Frieda Beach Blonde Ocean Waves Sea-Salt Spray, Pureology Highlight Stylist Sea-Kissed Texturizer

THE DOUBLE BUN (Cara Delevingne)

You know what they say, ‘double the bun, double the fun’. So if you’re feeling cheeky this summer (let’s be honest, who isn’t?), try Cara’s ‘do and give it some edge by pulling out the front sections.

You’ll need: De Lorenzo AfterGLOW, Shu Uemura Art of Hair Ample Angora, Scunci Beautiful Blends No Damage Blonde Hair Elastics

  1. Its so hot here most of the year so I tend to have my hair up to keep it off the back of my neck. The only time I have it down is if im in a cold location like Melbourne or overseas.

  2. These styles all look lovely any time of year. I have long hair and for summer its a twist and clip to keep it up and out of the way. If I'm going out its natural scrunch and spray so easy.

  3. Im not sure what about some of these are 'hot weather hairstyles' – hot weather hairstyles are usually kept up to avoid sweaty and heat on the back of your neck from your hair. In saying that, I love the sleek ponytail the best.

  4. Definitely hair up in this heat! A pony tail has been my go to most of this summer. Currently too short for a bun. Some of these hairstyles are just nice hairstyles rather than being hot weather styles. I’d avoid the wet look and the double buns.
