There’s something about Drew Barrymore that immediately makes you feel as if you’re in the company of an old pal. Maybe it’s her infectious smile and disarming warmth, or perhaps her relatability can be partially attributed to her affordable and accessible beauty recommendations.
After all, it’s no secret the actress loves a budget beauty buy (even her own Flower Beauty products are a bargain) and she often shares them too; from her at-home root touch-ups using the L’Oréal Paris Magic Retouch – Instant Root Concealer Spray ($10.99, Chemist Warehouse), to her most recent recommendation, a 94 per cent plant-based shampoo bar from Garnier.
Taking all 14.3 million of her Instagram followers inside her bathroom (and into her actual bath for that matter), Drew shared her one-step, plastic-free haircare routine using the Garnier Ultimate Blends Delicate Oat Softening Shampoo Bar ($18, Boohoo.com).
Kicking the video off with a head of hair that was in need of a little TLC, Drew told the camera: “It’s greasy, it’s dirty, it’s unbrushed and oh my goodness, I need a complete redo,” before opting for the shampoo bar that’s been specifically formulated to repair dry and damaged hair.
Much to our surprise and quickly putting to bed any reservations we had over the lack of sudsy-foaminess we crave in a shampoo, the biodegradable bar appeared to lather up the same as any regular shampoo would.
After proudly announcing (a couple of times) that her routine required “no conditioner”, the ease at which Drew’s brush glided down her tangle-free hair post-wash was impressive.
After a quick air-dry, Drew unveiled her fresh, glossy and affordable locks as she sings, “this is my hair all nice and shiny and clean”.
Well, we’re convinced. And if, like us, you’re now eager to jump straight into a relaxing, warm bath – oh and also dabble in the world of shampoo bars – here are a few of our top picks:

Have you tried a shampoo bar before? If not, would you?
Would like to try this
No conditioner needed? Never tried a shampoo or conditioner in a bar. Time to try.
Drew Barrymore is always bright and bubbly such a radiant personally, have never tried Shampoo Bars certainly unique and different, not sure if I would want to try them. They would be a great idea for traveling because they wouldn’t take up much space, long as you used a good Conditioner.
I’ve tried one that’s in t he shape of a heart. The heart is cute but I can’t say I was amazed at the results of the brand I’d tried.
She so beautiful
Ive not tried any of the haircare bars as yet but I would be interested in giving them a go.
I need a shampoo bar.
I’ve never tried one but I’m keen to give it a go. They would be great for travelling when you don’t want to take liquids as part of your carry on luggage.
I have tried Ethique shampoo bar & I was quite impressed by it. But I can’t give up my Eleven shampoo!
I have no intention of changing my tried and true hair routine worked out for me by my beautiful hairdresser.
You had me at one step. Hate having to spend extra time in the shower because of my very long hair.
She washes her hair IN THE BATH? Huh? How does she rinse properly? I love a bath, too – but not on hair washing day.
eleven is such a great brand – I don’t blame you for not wanting to give it up! : )
She’s just so lovely isn’t she!?!
Ne’er tried a shampoo bar. Not sure if d be interested. But then again, if someone could guarantee me it would get my poor damaged hair back into good condition, maybe I would give it a try.
I always remember Drew in ET (movie). She was aged about 4-5, and sooooooo cute! I think she’s lovely.
I haven’t tried a shampoo bar yet, but I think they are a great idea.
I’d try it but how to stop others from getting confused and using it as an all over body bar? I’d have to take it out of the shower each time.
So keen to try a shampoo bar!
I haven’t, but I have tried body bars from Ethique before. I think one was a body wash & the other a body scrub. Both smelt nice but I wasn’t overly fussed on the virtues of either (plus they were a pain when they disintegrated, or slipped out of my hands).
Not atm, my hair and scalp are a bit sensitive right now.
I haven’t tried them, I tend to stick with my tried and true shampoo for sensitive scalps, I have seen conditioner bars and might give them a try.
I had never heard of this tyoe of product. It certainly would be handy for traveling. No spillage.
I love this! Cheaper than Lush I think.
Fantastic idea especially for travel or elderly people like my mum who struggle with opening and lifting shampoo bottles.
I recently tried a shampoo bar but wasn’t impressed, my hair didn’t feel clean. I’ll stick to my normal shampoo and conditioner.
I tried a shampoo bar many years ago and wasn’t really impressed. I think it’s a great idea though, and maybe they’ve improved over the years. Love the idea of it being free of plastic packaging too.
Drew is a just awesome. I recently tried an Ethique shampoo bar. It cleansed my hair well without stripping but I noticed that after a couple of days, my scalp began to itch. I’ve not given up on it but the jury is undecided about the future of that bar in my bathroom.
I didnt know Garnier had a shampoo bar. Id be very keen to try that.
I use shampoo bars all the time… My favourite ones are from Beauty and the Bees… Locally made and owned company!!!
I would love to try shampoo bar.
I have never tried a bar shampoo and none of those shown would be appropriate for me. Argan is way too heavy for my fine hair and the other two have rosewater which is an allergy problem for me. I also am about 60 or 70 percent silver so I prefer to use something that makes it nice and pearly silver.
I haven’t had much success with shampoo bars in the past but they were few and far between. Now everyone seems to have one (yay – I love the idea of them) and I’m keen to try again. A bar that needs no conditioner sounds like a winner. My hair is very similar in texture to hers.
I don’t think I’d try a shampoo bar because I tend to stick with hair products for my coloured hair.
Weird, I just finished doing a survey about the possibility of developing some sort of strips for shampoo, conditioner etc and I see this!
After reading I would like to try, not for a while yet as I just bought some argan oil shampoo/conditioner – not finding these moisturizing so Im still in my quest to find the perfect hair products for me.
I wondered what the shampoo bar would be like and how to work out which one would be the right one for me. Have BH done any trials on them? I’ll have to have a look I think.
I have not heard of shampoo bars before.
Never tried one, I might give it a try one day.
I haven’t tried a shampoo bar before. I think they would get very messy? How do you store them in the shower?
I agree, not in the bath. I really never bath, just prefer to shower.
I tried a shampoo bar once and although I thought it was a great idea not having to spend time conditioning after washing, I found that it really wasn’t suitable for my fine, frizz prone hair. I like that they are made from all natural ingredients however I don’t think they will suit everybody.
I find baths are a relaxing treat for every now & then, but I prefer a shower for my daily ablutions.
Now you say that my daughters have a bath now and then with bath salts etc.
Oh I love Drew Barrymore, but definitely Shampoo bars are not for me! my hair is too thick and curly the soap bar gets lost in my hair & doesn’t really get to my roots
Ooh yeah like Lush bars
I tried shampoo bars years ago when travelling and hated them! Hopefully they’ve developed a bit more by now…
I don’t understand how you don’t need a conditioner after a shampoo bar yet conditioner bars are produced to
I really like Shampoo Bars so I’m really interested to see the reviews for the Glow Lab one when they are published. I like the idea of not having to use a conditioner. I’d like to know the one Drew Barrymore used🤔
My hair is very dry and prone to knots and tangles, so I wouldn’t even contemplate skipping using a conditioner.
I’ve got a couple of these must get out to try them
