Hair accessories are currently ruling our social media feeds, with hair scarves, headbands, hair bows and even the once-derided hair scrunchie now all highly coveted by fashion darlings. And if the David Jones AW18 runway is anything to go by, this trend is set to soar to new heights.

Aveda’s Creative Director for David Jones Terri Robertson-Kirkwood created enviable, fashion forward ponytails, worn tight around the face and puckered at the elastic for a voluminous look (a life-changing trick for thin locks that need a boost!). After securing the hair at the nape, another elastic was placed in the middle of the ponytail.
Then comes the hair accessory that we’re now obsessed with – a wide ribbon, secured at the top of the ponytail and anchored in the two hair elastics throughout the ponytail. And although Terri and the Aveda styling team used an elastic ribbon, this style would look just as cute with a hair scarf, hair clip or even an oversized brooch or piece of jewellery.
The end result is equal parts edgy, pretty and seriously fashion-forward. So get ready to up your hair game yet again, with Terri’s tips for recreating the look at home.
1. Prep the hair
Use a volumising mist, spraying at the roots to get the desired life. Brush through with a paddle brush to create the illusion of thicker, more voluminous hair.

2. Bulk it up
Coat all of the hair, apart from the hairline, with a thickening product and lightly blow-dry the product into the hair using your fingers to create root lift, but still maintaining the natural texture of the hair.

3. Nix the flyaways
Use a coin-sized amount of smoothing styling cream around the hairline to limit flyaways.

4. Add some texture
Create a middle part and coat hair with some texturising product to add depth. Collect the hair loosely and pull into a low ponytail at the nape of the head, while leaving the hair at the hairline out and covering the ears. Secure ponytail with a hair elastic.

5. Secure it in place
Wrap hair around the elastic and secure with a bobby pin. Then tie a second hair elastic towards the end of the ponytail. Tease the hair between the two elastics, before placing the ribbon or hair ornament onto the ponytail and secure.

6. Keep it there
Spritz the hair and remaining ponytail (not covered by the ribbon) liberally with texturising product while using fingers to loosen the ponytail. To finish tuck the hair, sitting over the ears, behind the ears so that the volume is away from the face. Then spritz the hair with hairspray for long lasting hold.
