The Simple Conditioner Hack That’ll Make Your Hair So Silky

If you’re someone who goes through conditioner twice as much as shampoo, listen up, this conditioner hack is for you.

Okay, okay, “hack” might be over-selling it. Apparently, some people have known about this shiny hair tip for years. Taught it from the moment they were old enough to shower solo, even.

But for those who weren’t given the 411 on how to use conditioner, our tip is this…

*Squeeze water from your hair* before applying conditioner

For those who are saying “duh”, well why didn’t you tell us earlier?!

Even if it seems like a no-brainer, we assure you that at least half (okay maybe a quarter) of the beautyheaven office didn’t know about it.

Apparently, if the hair is too wet when the conditioner is applied it won’t penetrate. So in order to give conditioner its best shot at smoothing and nourishing the hair, you should squeeze out the water from your lengths before applying.

Some of us were just going right in after shampooing on sopping wet hair, okay?! We didn’t know it was a crime!

Not to mention we even went and checked the back of our conditioner bottles… and do you know what the directions say? Apply to damp hair.

And the fact that sentence isn’t specific enough is the hill we will die on.

A conditioner breakdown for those still with us…

Step 1. Shampoo

Step 2. Rinse

Step 3. Squeeze water from the lengths of your hair (VERY important)

Step 4. Distribute conditioner evenly from mid-lengths to ends

Step 5. Give it a few minutes to absorb as per your product directions

Step 6. If you must detangle, use a wide-tooth comb (we like the TONI&GUY Wet/Dry Detangle Comb, $8 at Woolworths)

Step 7. Rinse

  1. “If you’re someone who goes through conditioner twice as much as shampoo, listen up, this conditioner hack is for you.” > Yes, listening!

I do all the tips already though. I also use this squelching method I picked up from Instagram.

  2. I did know this, and usually do it. While waiting those few minutes I do whatever else needs doing – shaving etc. My scalp is having a bit of a tantrum at the moment so I’m making sure not to get conditioner on it. My hair needs colouring but I want a healthy scalp before I do that.

  3. Yes, I know about this, and it’s a part i hate! I can never get the excess water out!
My stepdad loved vintage stuff, and was a genuine hippy (rest his soul). He had this hair care book that was written in the 60s and in it said to only ever lather your scalp and when you rinse it out,the water will disperse the shampoo suds down the lengths of your hair.
I’ve been washing my hair like that since I was 12.
    Give it a go!!
    Peace xxxxxx

  4. Tried this method twice and cannot see a difference, although I’m not loving the conditioner I’m currently using. It makes sense to squeeze out the excess water, so I’ll keep doing it.

  5. I must admit I don’t purchase more conditioner than shampoo because I use the conditioner that comes with my hair dye. Garnier Olia comes with a full tube which lasts me about a month or more.
