If you’re someone who goes through conditioner twice as much as shampoo, listen up, this conditioner hack is for you.
Okay, okay, “hack” might be over-selling it. Apparently, some people have known about this shiny hair tip for years. Taught it from the moment they were old enough to shower solo, even.
But for those who weren’t given the 411 on how to use conditioner, our tip is this…
*Squeeze water from your hair* before applying conditioner
For those who are saying “duh”, well why didn’t you tell us earlier?!
Even if it seems like a no-brainer, we assure you that at least half (okay maybe a quarter) of the beautyheaven office didn’t know about it.
Apparently, if the hair is too wet when the conditioner is applied it won’t penetrate. So in order to give conditioner its best shot at smoothing and nourishing the hair, you should squeeze out the water from your lengths before applying.
Some of us were just going right in after shampooing on sopping wet hair, okay?! We didn’t know it was a crime!
Not to mention we even went and checked the back of our conditioner bottles… and do you know what the directions say? Apply to damp hair.
And the fact that sentence isn’t specific enough is the hill we will die on.
A conditioner breakdown for those still with us…
Step 1. Shampoo
Step 2. Rinse
Step 3. Squeeze water from the lengths of your hair (VERY important)
Step 4. Distribute conditioner evenly from mid-lengths to ends
Step 5. Give it a few minutes to absorb as per your product directions
Step 6. If you must detangle, use a wide-tooth comb (we like the TONI&GUY Wet/Dry Detangle Comb, $8 at Woolworths)
Step 7. Rinse

Did you know about this conditioner hack? Or have you always known to squeeze?
A conditioner breakdown for those still with us… For once I am doing something right.
Yay for you! I had no idea
Me too -I thought it was just normal -go figure >
Oh I didn’t know qv did hair products
I so want to try them!!
No that is so good to know as QV are awesome.
It does make sense to do that.
I didn’t know to do this, I see that they only say to shampoo once in that list. I’ve been doing it twice, maybe I’m doing that part wrong as well.
I always shampoo twice too.
I have always got rid of excess water prior to conditioning.
I knew about this one. I have to use the tiniest bit of conditioner or my hair goes so flat.
I am the same Butterfly . I little conditioner works well on squeezed hair and too much conditioner seems to make my hair flat and heavy.
I realise too that maybe my hair goes flat as I have been applying conditioner all over not just at midway to ends.
I always apply conditioner from the scalp down. Didn’t know it was supposed to be from mid-length down.
I always apply conditioner all over scalp and hair and massage in S-P so I guess that is wrong too.
It’s a good reminder!
I have low porosity hair so I don’t think this method will work for me
Yeh I do tend to gently squeeze – the bit I don’t like is having to step out of the shower a bit – especially in winter!
Conditioner even the smallest amount makes my hair go greasy and limp.
Obviously lol
Yes I have always squeezed out excess water first
I already do this, it’s best for my long hair.
Agree.
I was today years old when I learnt this
I have always done this.
I’ve always done this
“If you’re someone who goes through conditioner twice as much as shampoo, listen up, this conditioner hack is for you.” > Yes, listening!
I do all the tips already though. I also use this squelching method I picked up from Instagram.
I did know this, and usually do it. While waiting those few minutes I do whatever else needs doing – shaving etc. My scalp is having a bit of a tantrum at the moment so I’m making sure not to get conditioner on it. My hair needs colouring but I want a healthy scalp before I do that.
This makes sense, especially for long hair, so it doesn’t water-down the conditioner
Yes, I know about this, and it’s a part i hate! I can never get the excess water out!
My stepdad loved vintage stuff, and was a genuine hippy (rest his soul). He had this hair care book that was written in the 60s and in it said to only ever lather your scalp and when you rinse it out,the water will disperse the shampoo suds down the lengths of your hair.
I’ve been washing my hair like that since I was 12.
Give it a go!!
Peace xxxxxx
Yes I knew it but now that you mention it maybe my daughter doesn’t which could explain why she goes through so much conditioner.
Been doing this for a while now.
I’ve always done this. I also like to leave the conditioner on while I shower my body, then rinse it out last.
Tried this method twice and cannot see a difference, although I’m not loving the conditioner I’m currently using. It makes sense to squeeze out the excess water, so I’ll keep doing it.
I’d never thought about it before! This makes sense, I guess. I’ll try it.
I thought that was the normal and most sensible thing to do. I also do a double shampoo because that’s the advice from my hairdresser.
I always squeeze water in my hair before applying conditioner.
I already knew this.. that black seed conditioner looks good
I didn’t know about this but luckily, I do it.
Interesting! Did not know this. Will try next time i’m washing my hair
what a great tip
I love reading beautyheaven articles!
Ummm, going to have to do this.
Leaving in product really helps to soften the hair
I must admit I don’t purchase more conditioner than shampoo because I use the conditioner that comes with my hair dye. Garnier Olia comes with a full tube which lasts me about a month or more.
My poor hair could do with more moisture.
A great tip! And a nice collection of conditioner recommendations
Would like to try the QV conditioner.
I thought everyone did this haha
