These 16 Celebs Are Embracing Their Grey Hair

Similar to a first kiss, first car or first home, getting your first grey hair is a memorable moment, whether it happens to you at age 50 or in JLo’s case, at age 23.

Men have long been graced with the flattering term of ‘silver fox’, however, as women, we haven’t always had the pressure-free ability to age gracefully.

While some of us aren’t ready to embrace our hair au naturale just yet, others are letting their greys grow out. The decision varies from person to person (and each is a-ok), and the same goes for some of our fave celebs.

Here’s what some of them have had to say about going grey…

Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer Aniston’s feelings towards going grey have come a long way since 2009. After admitting on Ellen that finding her first grey almost reduced her to tears, it appears Jen’s feelings have softened.

“If you want to go grey, go for it. Embrace whatever is going to make you happy,” she told Glamour. Does this mean she’s going to let go of her honey blonde mane? That’s yet to be decided.

Andie MacDowell

Speaking to The Zoe Report, Andie MacDowell revealed that the decision to stop colouring her hair wasn’t a sudden one. “I’d been wanting to do it for a few years,” she said. “And then when COVID happened and I saw the roots coming in, I thought it suited me.”

When asked why she waited so long to debut her grey hair (stepping out at the Cannes Film Festival in 2021), she reflected: “I was scared that people would be mean.”

Curious of people’s reactions, Andie confessed: “I read all the comments.” The experience proved to be a positive one, thankfully, and Andie was flooded with support and encouragement from other women who were inspired to follow suit.

“I think women are tired of the idea that you can’t get old and be beautiful,” she said.

“Men get old and we keep loving them. And I want to be like a man. I want to be beautiful and I don’t want to screw with myself to be beautiful.”

Lily Allen

In a complete pivot to what other celebs have been getting up to in quarantine (pink dye jobs and DIY fringes). Lily posted a makeup free selfie letting her grey streaks grow out through her usually jet black hair. Captioning it with a granny emoji, we think it’s Lily’s best look yet.

Cynthia Nixon and Sarah Jessica Parker

Just when we thought we couldn’t be much more excited for the return of Sex and the City, Sarah Jessica Parker posted this pic of her and Cynthia Nixon (AKA our beloved Carrie and Miranda) rocking their greys at their first reboot read-through. Cynthia was embracing all-over icy silver, while Sarah Jessica was letting her greys peep through with pride. Kristin may still be showing off Charlotte’s signature brunette, but hey, we’re in full support of doing whatever makes you feel your best. We will say, however, that we hope the greys stay strong for the show!

Jennifer Lopez

Finding her first greys in her early 20s,  J-Lo isn’t convinced on letting them grow out just yet. Speaking to People Magazine, she admitted that she has thought about it though, “I’m kind of tempted one day to let it go. It’d be kind of exciting! Maybe someday we’ll go really far away for like two months and I’m just going to see what it looks like.”

Salma Hayek

Salma is no stranger to embracing her grey hairs. At the 2018 Academy Awards, Salma wore her hair in a loose bun with her white hairs shining through. Last year, she displayed them once again in a stunning bare-faced selfie which she captioned #proudofmywhitehair.

Tracee Ellis-Ross

Tracee’s grey hair content has been one of the best things to come out of iso.

The actress, producer and beauty entrepreneur said back in 2017 that she wasn’t ready to embrace the silver strands just yet.

Fast forward three years and it seems Tracee has changed her mind.

Hilarie Burton

For any One Tree Hill  fans, you would know Hilarie as her role in the hit show as Peyton, the blonde curly-haired cheerleader.Dedicating her new hair to front line workers, Hilarie said “the ‘silver lining’ is literally growing out of my skull. For all of our frontline and essential workers who are too busy to fuss with things like hair colour, I grow mine out in solidarity with you.”

Shay Mitchell

The YOU and Pretty Little Liars actress and now mum has said she’s found at least five grey hairs so far.”I call them like wisdom hairs. Like more wisdom, great. You can’t freak out about it. I am getting older. I am happy. You know what that means? I have more experiences.”

Jamie Lee Curtis

For Jamie, the decision to embrace her natural colour came while she was sitting in the chair at the hairdresser.  About to undergo her routine colour she realised, “what the eff am I doing putting a chemical on my head that burns? What does it say that you walk into a room and not one person’s hair is her natural colour?”

Naomie Harris

While most of us put the appearance of our grey hairs down to genetics and ageing, Naomie Harris believes hers came about following an accident.”I actually had a car accident and when I woke up the next day I had loads of grey hair which I didn’t have before,” she said in 2017.

Alexandra Grant

L.A artist, Alexandra Grant took to Instagram in 2019 to warn of the links between breast cancer and hair dye. Capturing our attention at her red carpet debut with boyfriend Keanu Reeves, Grant dazzled us with her beautiful grey hair. “I went grey prematurely in my early 20’s… and dyed my hair every colour along the way until I couldn’t tolerate the toxicity of the dyes any more.”

Eva Longoria

Although Eva is still covering her grey roots, she isn’t shy about the fact she’s got them in the first place.

Before Eva discovered the  L’Oreal Magic Root Cover Up which you can watch her using, here, she admits to some interesting attempts to cover up her silver strands, which she’s been dying since she was 18.

Eva told Us Weekly. “[To cover my roots] I used to use those mascaras, and it would leave your hair sticky. Then I would use my black eyeshadow, and it would come off when the wind blows.”

Letizia Ortiz

In a transition as surprising as her jump from TV reporter to the Queen of Spain, Letizia has decided to forgo her access to the best hairdressers in the world and let her natural roots shine through.

Have you let your greys grow out? If not, are you thinking about it?

  1. I’m not ready to go grey yet, so I’ll be doing my regular touch ups for a while – wish I’d gotten my mum’s good hair genes rather than my dad’s, she’s got less grey than me!

  2. I can't help but think Alexandra Grant is so right about the link between hair dye and breast cancer. My mum was very active, fit and healthy and she colored her hair countless times. She got breast cancer out of nowhere 2 years ago and she lost her battle this year. So embrace grey hair and be happy with what you have. I Love You Always Mum xoxo

  3. They all look so lovely – I’ve been considering letting my just come in as they come in rather than trying to dye and henna them away, and these pictures help (though I do not not everyone here has grey hair!) – Andie is especially beautiful.

  4. After losing my hair during cancer treatment I decided that when it grew back that I wouldn’t colour it anymore.
It took me quite some time to get used to my grey hair but I do like it now. It was great not to have to worry about doing the regrowth during lockdown.

  5. I admire people that can embrace grey and some people can wear with style but I am not one of them. I let my hair go grey a year ago and I did not suit at all and I hated it so I am back to the colour wheel again.

  6. Decided to let my grey hair shine through I have a Salt and Pepper colouring sometimes goes blonde. Now days I try to keep it a nice Silver Colour now days my hair style looks like Jamie Lee Curtis. 🙂🎄🌹

  7. I’m caught between a rock and a hard place!

My hair is greying quite nicely NOW and is a lovely silvery shade but it seems your hair doesn’t grey evenly (well, not mine!) so I’m now supplementing the grey with blonde foils to blend in my stubborn dark blonde (particularly at the back) that refuses to give in and go grey!

Process initially started in June 2019 (coming up 3 years) using only blonde but after 6+ months last year when I couldn’t get to the hairdresser (no colour or cut) I have to say I did get used to it and didn’t suffer too badly as the growing out grey blended well andthe hairdresser and I decided to embrace it and keep it – supplementing it with foils of Gronde!

Lockdown did me a favour! But it may take another few years until my ‘natural’ grey has take over enough to ditch the hairdresser foils.
