The idea of going through your partner’s phone? Eh, boring (and quite frankly, toxic – don’t do it!). Rummaging through his toiletry bag, however? Go forth and snoop.
In particular, keep an eye out for a black and green cylindrical tub. Why? Because trust me when I tell you, the ultimate product for fighting flyaways, polishing off the perfect slicked-back bun and setting your brows for the day is sitting among the men’s personal care items. So ladies, it’s time we let the people know!
Ok, enough time wasting and talking in code. The product I’m hyping up is the Urbane Mess Styling Fibre ($9 at Woolworths) and here’s everything you need to know about how it fits into his routine – and into mine…
How does my husband use the Urbane Mess Styling Fibre?
On the whole, my husband is as low-maintenance as it comes.
He’ll wash his face with tepid water after a day of wearing sunscreen and zinc (just typing that makes me breakout), and I’d be confident in saying he’s likely never moisturised his body. Mind you, I don’t think he’s ever showered without using half a bottle of the Dove Skin Cleanse Triple Moisture Body Wash ($17 at Woolworths), so I’ll give him that.
When it comes to his hair, however, the man doesn’t mess around. For context, he has a head full of the most amazing, thick curls. Though, as we’ve all experienced in our teenage years, anything that makes us remotely ‘different’ is something we repel.
So, as a result, he has mastered a self-taught routine that he’s carried into his 30’s and refers to as ‘curl management‘. What exactly does this entail? An efficient and effective method of ensuring his curls behave at all times. It’s very impressive.
Step one involves wearing a beanie as his hair dries, and step two is the Urbane Mess Styling Fibre, a flexible-medium hold putty; which just by the way, he’s not thrilled that I’ve discovered.
Now over to me…
My verdict on the Urbane Mess Styling Fibre
In terms of its texture, this styling product strikes the perfect balance between concrete-like gunk (as some hair putties often are) and being too watery to actually provide any real grip.
Yeah sure, anyone who touches your head might think it feels a little crispy. But why are they touching your perfectly-styled hair anyway?
And honestly, as soon as a drop of shampoo hits your scalp, your mane will return to its natural, silky state. What this means is that any lingering residue and lengthy post-styling admin isn’t a concern.
How I use it to style my brows…
Though it’s intended for the hair on your head, use this as a suggestion and not a hard-and-fast rule.
If you’re yet to commit to a professional brow lamination but want the same fluffy and frozen effect, twirl a spoolie through the putty and brush your brows upward.
Please see the aggressively close image below for the product’s result on both my hair and brows!
For anyone who’s after something with an even stronger hold, Urbane Mess also has an even grippier product within its range, the Urbane Mess Hair Pliable Putty ($9 at Woolworths). If you’ve tried this one, let me know as I have questions. The main one being, does it have the same delicious summery, coconut scent like the Styling Fibre does?
At just $9 a pop, this multi-purpose styler is impeccable value. It’s even cheaper when he buys it and you can use it for free!
As for the tension this might cause to your relationship when he realises it’s missing from his toiletries bag again, well that’s your business (and problem)!

Have you tried this hair styling product? What beauty products do you share with your partner?
I have’nt tried, it but it’s a good idea for your brows. I don’t actually share anything with my partner, luckily we have a large bathroom to store all our stuff
Never thought about using something like that for brows!
I have a soap styler that I use on my brows but never thought to use my man’s hair products on my head and brows.
That sounds interesting, I use a clear mascara for my eyebrows.
Mine pinches the moisturizer, my shower oil and body scrub sometimes haha
I buy this for my sons hair. Never thought to try it in my own hair and I quite often wear a slicked back bun. Need to try this.
Ruby, your hubby does uave a good head of hair!
I’ve been known to use Brylcreem on my ends.
Great idea to use it on brows. Not something I would have thought of.
Good for taming hair
Ruby thinks her husband is as low-maintenance as it comes, mine is even lower. Hair product. What’s that? I can almost hear him saying. Shampoo will be what he is thinking. Not even Conditioner.
I do like the brow trick. Sounds way more cost effective than the brow gel I use.
I haven’t tried.
What a great idea for using this stuff! Love it!
I don’t take anything of hubby’s because he doesn’t have anything that I would want to use. On the other hand, I encourage him to use all my products, and he’s gradually learning.
I really like the articles on the affordable and easily accessed products. Keep em coming…
I’ll have to buy this for myself, because my husband doesn’t use any products.
My husband doesn’t use any products either and in actual fact would more likely use mine than me his.
Its honestly never occurred to me to use anything on my eyebrows! other than pencil to fill in some gaps I have
Interesting. I was given that product once and gave it away.
What a versatile product!
Affordable and multi-use by the sound of it. That çrispy’feel goes if you comb your hair after the product had dried on it
Good to know -must try this.
She looks so lovely in the close up.
Interesting ill look out for this product, keen to Try something new
sounds like a good idea
Such an interesting article, love the way you write Ruby.
I have lots of my late husband’s toiletries to work through and though I’ve given or thrown a lot away I think there might be some hair stuff still there. I will have a look and if there are some give them a try before my next hair wash.
My husband doesn’t have much hair to style 😂
Clever idea and certainly one worth trying.
