Is Pantene really bad for your hair? Does it leave a silicone build-up on your hair? You asked us, so we went straight to the source and asked Pantene Senior Scientist, Dr Jasmine Karsono, for the answers…
Q: “The number one question that I have and would love cleared up once and for all is …Is it true that in reality Pantene despite being a good seller is in fact bad for your hair? I have been told by more than one hair stylist at 3 different salons that Pantene leaves a silicone like build up on the hair which over time is very bad…” – Meedee
A: There are many kinds and types of silicones and it can be formulated and manufactured in many different ways. Silicone is a common ingredient that is used in many hair and skin products, not only in Pantene. It helps to reduce friction between hair strands and provide an artificial layer to replace the natural layer that has been damaged by wear and tear.
We have done studies in our labs and there has been no evidence of that Pantene has any build up effect on hair. Whilst the conditioning ingredient leaves a nice protective layer onto the hair strand, it gets washed off when we shampoo our hair and a fresh new layer gets coated as a result.
For those who use styling products daily, get product build up or have oily hair, my tip is to use a clarifying shampoo every now and then, no matter what brand you use.
Q: “I use Pantene shampoo and conditioner on a regular basis, is there any chance I will encounter a product build up from the silicone and have to use a clarifying shampoo? If yes, what clarifying shampoo is best? How do I know I have a product build up from silicone?” – Bellaaaa
A: Our research has shown that there is no “build-up” or “additional coating” – every time you wash or condition your hair, it will be a fresh layer of conditioning agents, obtained from that particular wash. If you do find your hair has a build up, I recommend using a clarifying shampoo, like Pantene Clarifying Shampoo, once a week.
