Five ways to wear any hat well

They just don’t tend to sit on our heads as well as they do on boys – and it can drive us batty – especially on sunny days or when a hat is called upon for reasons of the fashion variety.

The good news is that there are ways you can ensure all hats look good on your head. Yes yours! Not just gorgeous models like Jess Hart, who sport glorious caps like the one she is wearing in the above image at the launch of Victoria’s Secret PINK MLB Collection at the VS PINK Store in Soho, New York. Though, she does look dashing in that headwear, doesn’t she?

Here are the tips you need to know for your face shape and hair type.

YOU HAVE A ROUND FACE:
A hat (especially a cap or a hat that’s tight across the crown of your head) can really accentuate your round face shape. It’s best to wear your hair in a low-slung ponytail that sits over your shoulder to give the appearance of length around your neck area. Alternatively, if you want to wear your hair down, simply part your hair a little deeper to one side so that your fringe sweeps across your face just under the brim, effectively ‘cutting out’ a piece of your face – and the ‘round’ shape.

YOU HAVE A LONGER FACE:
If your face is a little on the long side, try experimenting with different hair heights and shapes until you’re happy with how your hair looks. For example, why not try curling your hair into really tight ringlets and then brushing them out? Not only will this help to ‘shorten’ the appearance of your face, it will also provide an interesting texture, too. A boho fishtail braid is also another great option. Simply create a fishtail braid that falls to one side and then pull at it until it becomes loose and chunky to take the focus away from your face shape.

YOU DON’T WANT TO LOOK BALD:
Many girls think that they look like they’ve got no hair as soon as they put on a hat – and the fact of the matter is, that’s exactly what can happen. To ensure your hair is ready and waiting to be teamed with your favourite hat, you have to ensure you groom your hair that way. Start by adding a little texturizing spray to damp hair (we love David Babaii Boho Beach Spray) and tucking your hair behind your ears. Ensure your crown is smooth and then blow dry your locks until around 80 per cent dry. Use your fingers to tousle your strands and you’re left with the perfect foundation for any hat.

YOU HAVE GREASY HAIR:
Hats are an amazing way to hide oily roots, this is true – but did you know, you can also wear your hair in such a way that it still looks chic (and not too sleek and oily)? All you need to do is fashion your lengths into a low side bun near your ear and fasten with an elastic. Voila! Instant elegance – and not a greasy strand in sight.

YOU WANT TO DRESS IT UP:
If you’re off to somewhere like the races and want to don a fancy hat or fascinator, it’s important to use your hair as the foundation for your headwear. Begin by focusing on where you want your hat to sit: slightly to one side, towards the back of your head or simply right on top? Then, ensure your hair acts as the perfect backdrop for your headwear. If your hat sits to one side, why not try parting your hair deep to one side and using your lengths to create a focal point on the opposite side? The moral is, it’s all about the balance! If your hat is big and fancy, let it do the talking and use your hair to complement it in a subtle way. If your hat is more on the understated side, put more effort into ensuring your ‘do looks dazzling.
