Want to get ahead of the mane game? Consider it our mission to keep you up to date with the latest 2023 hair trends to know. From expert-predicted hair colours to the haircuts gaining steam on Pinterest, you’ll find endless inspiration for the salon right here.
And just as much as we love a drastic hair makeover at the hands of a professional, some of the best hair trends also come in DIY form. Last year we saw TikTok go mad for all things heatless rollers, hot air brushes and basically anything that would give us that Cindy Crawford-like blow-dry. (Yes, we’re still trying.)
As for this year, only time will tell. But we’ve got a good feeling about all the hair hacks and hot new looks forecasted so far…
2023 hair trends to have on your radar
#1 Brown to pink balayage
Oh you thought balayage was long gone? Never! But there is a new colour combo in town. Brown to pink balayage has seen a +280% search increase on Pinterest. And now that we’ve had a browse ourselves, we certainly see the appeal.
#2 Chopped bob haircut
No, you’re addicted to bob hairstyles. And in 2023, they’re only getting shorter. Kirby Lago, Owner of Pelo By Lago and Goldwell Colour Specialist, predicts the popular cut will be “sitting sharp around the jawline”. Not to mention Pinterest saw a +550% increase for the search term ‘chopped bob haircut’. Go short or go home, apparently.
#3 Short braid hairstyles
With short haircuts comes the need for short hairstyles. So it’s really a no-brainer that this one also made the 2023 hair trends list. Stock up on Lady Jayne Bobby Pins ($2.99 at Chemist Warehouse) and get creative.
#4 Soft texture
If you aren’t keen to be a part of the short and blunt club (we’d also like to phone a friend), a focus on soft, feminine texture will keep your lengths looking fresh in 2023. Jason Fassbender, Creative Director Willomina Salon & Goldwell Lead Stylist says, “we’re doing less ‘layering’ but keeping things loose with heaps of texture and tapered ends in place of solid blunt baselines.” The soft grip of Goldwell’s Stylesign Dry Boost ($29.50 at hairhouse.com.au) is key for creating that tousled, effortless finish.
#5 Wet-look updos
The opposite is true when it comes to updos. “Messy updos and loose buns are being traded for wet-look, snatched ponytails and scraped-back gel looks,” says Jason. Take your styling cues from the ‘90s and early ‘00s.
#6 ‘70s style fringes
When it comes to fringes, there are going to be a lot of customisable options. “The bangs of 2023 will adapt to the natural texture of hair,” says Xin Guo, owner of Xin Twenty One in Brisbane. “Without straightening, you can adapt to swirls, waves, curls — the style of the ’70s.” Jason also notes that curtain bangs are “morphing into fuller, soft textured fringes”. And Di Jones, owner of The Mane Space in Manly says “the pinched fringed and bottleneck cut is back in”. See? Options!
#7 Back to brunette
The craving for rich, chocolate colour is showing no signs of slowing down. “We are going through so much 5BG (a rich golden brown from Goldwell’s colour library) — everyone is living for the full-colour look,” says Di. “We are still foiling of course but enjoying bringing back the brunette.”
Karine Strachan, Stylist & Colourist at Tribe Lifestyle Salon Group, seconds the sentiments saying, “we are [still] seeing more natural colours, people are ditching the blonde and going back to brunette.”
If you’re considering switching up your colour at home, remove any unwanted old colour first with something like the Scott Cornwall Decolour Stripper ($20.99 at Chemist Warehouse).
Which of these hair trends is your favourite? Will you be switching up your look in 2023?
I love rich chocolate brown hair colour but its just too hard to maintain with my heavy greys.
Perhaps it is time to embrace the greys! Silver looks beautiful.
I agree it does look lovely on a lot of people but I really don’t suit grey -I look really washed out unfortunately
You are not convincing me!
I work in an office environment and I don’t know if I would look professional if I let it go grey.
I totally agree, I just need to gather courage to go through the process
I know the feeling and I tried to go grey but I really don’t suit it.
#7 is my favourite. I also love the sunnies in #2 😎
Yes the sunnies are great
I didn’t notice the sunnies until you mentioned it!
yes very classy
1 is my favourite, after having purple hair for almost a decade I’m growing it out and it’s more like a balyage now.
Nothing here says I need to change my hairstyle.
no in fact some look like they need a good trim and brush
I love the pink but wouldnt suit me at all.
70’s style fringe? I’ve been rocking that for years!
Loving the short braid hairstyle
Love the pink bayalage
The last look is the one I like the most, rich chocolate colour.
Some beautiful Hair Trends love the back to brunette, at the moment I am growing my hair out hopefully I will get it cut to a long bob so that I can put it up if I want too.
I returned from the hairdresser about an hour ago. In terms of length, my hair is closest to picture #3.
I like all these looks and I like the variety.
Love the curls, but with my hair almost impossible.
mine too -it is straight as
I love waves but for some strange reason my hair can’t hold even the slightest wave or curl. I’ve tried everything.
Want to try a fringe soon.
yes i like a fringe too
I love the soft texture and wet updo’s.
We have similar preferences – I think they look simple and femimine
Number 4, love
Love the pink baylage!
love the soft texture and the wet up-do looks
some nice styles and I do like the pink balayage but nothing jumping out at me
Soft texture brunette – yes!
Yes number 5 is good, but most of them a pretty.
#5 is such a cute hairstyle!
My favourite is No. 2.
the brunette hair at the end is so pretty
It is so nice, it looks like multiple shades.
Not sure pink hair would be professional for the office environment.
Some lovely looks
Not no 6 but the rest look nice
Nice to see brunettes having a moment
So many wonderful hair trends and love number #7.
I really love the brown to pink balyage. Looks amazing.
I’ve just gone a bit darker and shorter.
Id probably give the 70s style fringes ago for 2023.. i’ve been thinking about it
Looking at your profile pic, I think a fringe would suit you Duaa2202.
All styles are great, 70s hairstyle is my curly hair
I love the pink but not on me though. Once upon in my younger years I had no 4 and then chopped it off when I had kids.
Nothing too out there… and something to suit everyone.
Now I’m thinking about pink balayage. Maybe?
I need a hair colour that will not fade.
I think I will be sticking with my Bob, but will see if my hairdresser can change it up a bit.
The short bob looks good and easy care for summer
I’m such a trendsetter ;D
I’ve been rocking the brown to pink balayage for about 4 years now.
Love the brown to pink balayage, but not something I would personally do. Looks amazing!!!!! I’m more more of a bob girl. Nice to know I’m on trend!!!!
Wait… people still use Pinterest?
I love the pink hair style, have been wanting to try it but not sure what impact it will have on my hair.
OMG – the curly 70s fringe is amazing!
Short braid hairstyles and chopped bob haircut are my favourites. I do like the pink balayage too.
Love the pink!
Hello Silver or should I say grey.
Wishing all the BH staff a festive period. Hope you all enjoy the break and spend some quality time with friends and family. Thank you for all the love throughout the year.
Back to brunette. Love the chocolate colour.
I love all of these! Balayage has always been a favourite of mine…fun to do and easy for clients to maintain.
Loving the first look
I like the soft texture look.
