Want to get ahead of the mane game? Consider it our mission to keep you up to date with the latest 2023 hair trends to know. From expert-predicted hair colours to the haircuts gaining steam on Pinterest, you’ll find endless inspiration for the salon right here.
And just as much as we love a drastic hair makeover at the hands of a professional, some of the best hair trends also come in DIY form. Last year we saw TikTok go mad for all things heatless rollers, hot air brushes and basically anything that would give us that Cindy Crawford-like blow-dry. (Yes, we’re still trying.)
As for this year, only time will tell. But we’ve got a good feeling about all the hair hacks and hot new looks forecasted so far…
2023 hair trends to have on your radar
#1 Brown to pink balayage
Oh you thought balayage was long gone? Never! But there is a new colour combo in town. Brown to pink balayage has seen a +280% search increase on Pinterest. And now that we’ve had a browse ourselves, we certainly see the appeal.
#2 Chopped bob haircut
No, you’re addicted to bob hairstyles. And in 2023, they’re only getting shorter. Kirby Lago, Owner of Pelo By Lago and Goldwell Colour Specialist, predicts the popular cut will be “sitting sharp around the jawline”. Not to mention Pinterest saw a +550% increase for the search term ‘chopped bob haircut’. Go short or go home, apparently.
#3 Short braid hairstyles
With short haircuts comes the need for short hairstyles. So it’s really a no-brainer that this one also made the 2023 hair trends list. Stock up on Lady Jayne Bobby Pins ($2.99 at Chemist Warehouse) and get creative.
#4 Soft texture
If you aren’t keen to be a part of the short and blunt club (we’d also like to phone a friend), a focus on soft, feminine texture will keep your lengths looking fresh in 2023. Jason Fassbender, Creative Director Willomina Salon & Goldwell Lead Stylist says, “we’re doing less ‘layering’ but keeping things loose with heaps of texture and tapered ends in place of solid blunt baselines.” The soft grip of Goldwell’s Stylesign Dry Boost ($29.50 at hairhouse.com.au) is key for creating that tousled, effortless finish.
#5 Wet-look updos
The opposite is true when it comes to updos. “Messy updos and loose buns are being traded for wet-look, snatched ponytails and scraped-back gel looks,” says Jason. Take your styling cues from the ‘90s and early ‘00s.
#6 ‘70s style fringes
When it comes to fringes, there are going to be a lot of customisable options. “The bangs of 2023 will adapt to the natural texture of hair,” says Xin Guo, owner of Xin Twenty One in Brisbane. “Without straightening, you can adapt to swirls, waves, curls — the style of the ’70s.” Jason also notes that curtain bangs are “morphing into fuller, soft textured fringes”. And Di Jones, owner of The Mane Space in Manly says “the pinched fringed and bottleneck cut is back in”. See? Options!
#7 Back to brunette
The craving for rich, chocolate colour is showing no signs of slowing down. “We are going through so much 5BG (a rich golden brown from Goldwell’s colour library) — everyone is living for the full-colour look,” says Di. “We are still foiling of course but enjoying bringing back the brunette.”
Karine Strachan, Stylist & Colourist at Tribe Lifestyle Salon Group, seconds the sentiments saying, “we are [still] seeing more natural colours, people are ditching the blonde and going back to brunette.”
If you’re considering switching up your colour at home, remove any unwanted old colour first with something like the Scott Cornwall Decolour Stripper ($20.99 at Chemist Warehouse).
