Perfume packing: what makes scents

Perfume packing: what makes scents

So I’ve written before how a fragrance can instantly transport you back to a place or a period in time that can seem a little fuzzy. It has the ability to rekindle your memory and bring back memories of places and faces that you’d long since stored away.

With a Big Trip on the cards for me very soon (more on that later in the week), I thought I’d nut out the perfume pickle I found myself in as soon as I even thought about opening a suitcase. When you’re as big a fragrance fan as I am –

how are you expected to choose just a few scents to pack? Especially when your baggage allowance is less than what you’d take on a weekend mini break. Cue sigh.

PERFUME PICK FOR… ON THE PLANE:

When you’re sans a shower and a proper make-up station on a 20-hour flight, the one small element you have to depend on in the quest for feeling fresh is a sweet scent that can assist in making you feel less gross and more refreshed with a single spritz. Oh, and it has to be under 100mL (cue eye roll.)

I’ll be packing my Marc Jacobs Daisy Petite on the Go for when I board my Boeing 747. Why you ask? Well it’s a 20mL, super-sweet scent that incorporates notes of wild strawberry, ruby red grapefruit and jasmine petals – and is sure to serve as the perfect pick-me-up for when I arrive at my destination.

PERFUME PICK FOR… DAY:

It may seem like a lot to ask for, but during the day my neck requires a scent that will go with market browsing, cider-sipping and endless shopping. It has to be fresh and light and totally feminine – and it has to be a clean slate when it comes to the memory bank (as in, not remind me of anything else.)

L’Eau de Chloé Eau de Toilette is a newbie from one of my favourite perfume brands. A twist on the original Chloe Rose scent, this spring-ready version contains distilled rose water, delicate citrus and patchouli – and is the perfect uplifting and memory-preserving scent for any Big Trip.

PERFUME PICK FOR… EVENING:

As you well know, night-time is the perfect time to inject a little ‘sass’ into your ensemble. When hitting the town with my bold lip and one of my (I’m sure thousands of) new purchases, I’ll also grab my bottle of Narcisco Rodriguez for Her. I wear this juice all the time at home, and I feel secure in its ability to make me feel gorgeous, sensual and a little spectacular in an unknown place.

Not sure why it’s so prominent in the perfume stakes? Well I like it because its modern, with an old school twist. Notes of musk, orange blossom and vanilla are prominent throughout the development of the scent, from top to bottom – and it just feels sexy when it’s on my skin. The compliments roll in by the truckload – and the black bottle just screams chic traveller.

SERIOUS FACT ABOUT PACKING FRAGRANCES: when travelling with anything precious (such as glass perfume bottles), be sure to store them in the middle of your suitcase, (each in separate plastic bags) about half way in from the top and tightly surround them with cushiony jumpers. Be sure to put a very large cushiony piece of clothing between each bottle, too.
